After a year of planning, red tape (horrendous), health checks etc Katuma our young Giant Otter finally left these shores bound for Emperor Valley Zoo, Port of Spain, Trinidad. This is the first time a Giant Otter bred in this country has been exported and we are very proud of this achievement.
He was born at the Chestnut Centre where his parents and sister still live. Manoki, Panambi and Meamu.
I heard late last night from Normal Biptah, Curator of Animals, that he had arrived safely.
After a short period of settlement he will meet his new partner Suzie.
This is all done under the auspices of the International Studbook for Giant Otters who wanted these 2 otters together as they are totally unrelated and if they breed will produce a strong genetic line for possible re-introductions into the Amazon.
The Giant otter is endangered in the wild with numbers decreasing
WE ARE SO RELIEVED HE IS SAFE AFTER HIS FLIGHT AND WILL BE ENJOYING THE SUNSHINE TODAY.
