The zoo's Facebook had a little update saying that Tessa and Kimba are doing well after the death of poor little Zuri. Tessa is finally allowed outside again and they are eating - which is a good thing. I wonder if they'll ever conceive again.
 
I saw that as well :) It's nice to hear that Tessa and Kimba are doing well after the loss. It's also wonderful to see how supportive the whole community is of the zoo, the staff, and the animals!

Tessa and Kimba are both very young giraffes so I would say that there will be more calves from the pair in the future if everything goes alright. What I'm interested in seeing is if the zoo will be bringing in any more giraffes to try and build a herd dynamic again.

After the one died in Nov. they said they were gonna bring in another one in March 2011.

I think they should build a statue of zuri in memory of her

Really? I had never heard that. If so, the zoo likely decided against bringing in another giraffe so soon due to Tessa's pregnancy. It will now be interesting to see how soon or when the zoo will be bringing in another giraffe.

The zoo said that they would be erecting a statue of Emi after her passing in 2009, but I'm not sure that they ever have. I know that I have not seen it. It will be interesting to see if they have one built for Zuri. Though statues sound nice in theory, the problem is that you have to have the cash to have them built. Available cash is limited in zoos and often that money is needed else where, unless, of course, someone donates it.
 
They could always do what they did in the old days and have the carcasses of the deceased animals stuffed and mounted in the carnivore house. I'm glad I wasn't born when that particular gem was practiced. Anyway, off to the zoo now!!

Incidentally, there was a comment on the Facebook post regarding Tessa and Kimba that said giraffes seem to mourn their young better and longer than Casey Anthony. Off-color, but I had to laugh.
 
went to the zoo, posted a ton of photos

part of wolf woods was still closed

why do the african penguins not have access to water, i know it because of the little penguins but cant they just fence it off under the bridge?

it was really hard to go over the giraffe ridge without knowing zuri isnt there. i heard on Fb that a kid dropped off flowers on the indoor viewing window, and it was there

Cougar update- the glass was installed and the viewing area looks cleaned up and there are now more rocks in the exhibit, so the exhibit looks like it will open this month

What time were you at the zoo today, Cinzoo Man? I was there from 9:15 to about 11:30 - then it got too hot and I had to seek the air conditioner.

Volunteered from 8 to 12 then walked around til 2, i go every Wednesday in the summer. It was way too hot.

That was an interesting practice to say the least. The tale of the old stuffed donkey that was displayed in the Carnivora House was one of my favorites. The zoo also used to dump the bodies of deceased animals in Swan Lake. The elephant skull in Jungle Trails was actually recovered from the lake.

-It'll be interesting to see what becomes of that region of Wolf Woods. Personally I would like to see a new enclosure for the zoo's Bobcats.

-The African Penguin enclosure was the former home to the Cape Barren Geese. Since these geese are largely terrestrial, the enclosure did not feature a large pool. The penguins have not been in the enclosure for long, so I assume something will be done for them in the near future.

-It's great to hear that the construction on the Cougar enclosure is moving along well.

Wow! i thought the same thing for the bobcat today, but it is fenced in more and would be to small for a medium sized animal

Thats disgusting about throwing the dead animals in the lake, i always thought that elephant skull was fake

the blog said they turned up the lights in the potto and burmese python and other exhibits, i think they took my advice when i told them on Fb that it was impossible to see the potto and loris, and i told them it would be better to turn the lights just a little bit more for the non-nocturnal animals, and they did. Not to sound to full of myself

I thought the elephant skull was fake too!!! I'm thoroughly creeped out now!

I would love to see the bobcats, as well as the bears, move over to wolf woods. It could really become an awesome representation of Ohio wildlife.

Before Wolf Woods was built in the early/mid 2000s, that area was an Ohio woodland exhibit. Of course, I'd still love to see the Bobcats and American Black Bears moved to larger, more natural enclosures in Wolf Woods. I'm just not sure if there is enough room for new exhibits to be built there. Wolf Woods is in the heart of the zoo and is surounded on all sides by the Children's Zoo, Rhino Reserve, and the bear exhibits.

Since the otter exhibit is off exhibit and the glass hasnt been fixed yet, i think they should move the bobcat into there. but i cant think of anything that can go into the former turkey exhibit, its just way too small for a medium sized animal because of the new fencing.
 
I can't exactly see the zoo renovating the otter exhibit for bobcats. For one thing, the otters are just too popular with zoo visitors that it would be in the zoo's best interest to continue exhibiting them. Second, the otter exhibit would have to go through some major renovations to even be suitable for bobcats, as the pool would have to be filled in, the viewing areas would have to be reworked accordingly, and the enclosure barriers would have to be completely reworked to prevent escape. The current barriers are too short and too weak (The rear barrier of the exhibit is only a chain of fake reeds and hotwire) to hold the cats. The exhibit would still be on the small side, even after the renovations. In the end it would likely be cheaper to just build a new enclosure.

i disagree with everything you just said, all they need to do is put a net over the top of the exhibit
 
I agree with Kudu21, it would cost more money to renovate the otter exhibit than to just continue showcasing the otters, which I think are adorable and wonderful to watch. I am curious to know what they're putting in the former turkey exhibit. Maybe they'll going to bring back the skunk or maybe they're expanding the fox exhibit?

Totally off-topic, but I'm going to a place out in Troy, OH tomorrow called Idle Hour Ranch. It has a giraffe that you're allowed to feed, pet and even kiss. It also has other animals that you're allowed to interact with on a much closer level than at the zoo. Has anyone heard of it? Which is the appropriate area to discuss this on the forum?

I agree with the part about the fox exhibit.


Does anyone know what happened to the other 3 giraffes and why we got rid of them, besides breeding reasons?
