Nocturnal Exhibits in the United Kingdom

Nocturnal exhibits are among my favourite styles of exhibit in a zoological garden, encouraging elusive animals that look nothing like the diurnal species we are familiar with to be active in their usual, dark setting.

The purpose of this thread is to create as comprehensive as possible of a list of every nocturnal exhibit in the United Kingdom (apologies if such a thread already exists, although I could not find any). What follows is a list of every such exhibit that I have personally seen and a species list, as well as others which I am yet to see, but am aware of. This will, of course, be nowhere near every such exhibit in the country, so I would be very curious and grateful if other members who are better-informed than myself could add any nocturnal exhibits that I have not listed. :)

On that note, here is the list:

Cannon Hall Farm - Small Mammal House (24 species):
European Harvest Mouse
Sugar Glider
Large Hairy Armadillo
Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec
Long-eared hedgehog
Persian Jird
Brandt’s Vole
Acacia Rat
Black Rat
Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat
Northern Treeshrew
Common Yellow-toothed Cavy
Brazilian Cavy
African Woodland Dormouse
African Pygmy Mouse
Cactus Mouse
House Mouse
Turkish Spiny Mouse
Guinea Pig
Hermanns Tortoise
Cichlid sp
Barbary Striped Grass Mouse
Long-nosed Potoroo

(Species list credit to @pangolin12 and @Alwaysevergreen )

Wingham Wildlife Park - Nocturnal House (16 species):
Asian Palm Civet
Senegal Galago
Egyptian Fruit Bat
Indochinese Clouded Leopard
Northern Luzon giant cloud rat
Gila Monster
Beaded Lizard
New Caledonia Giant Gecko
African Fat-tailed Gecko
Savu Island Python
Three-banded Armadillo
Racoon Dog
Tawny Frogmouth
Spix's Night Monkey
Sugar Glider
Naked Mole Rat

(Species list credit to @DesertRhino150 and @pipaluk )

ZSL London Zoo - Night Life (7 species):
Grey Slender Loris
Malagasy Giant Jumping Rat
Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec
Senegal Galago
Naked Mole Rat
Pygmy Slow Loris
Potto

Aye-Aye are located within the same building, and also within a nocturnal exhibit, but it is part of In With The Lemurs.

Tropiquaria Zoo - Nocturnal House (6 species):
African Dormouse
Common Genet
Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec
Long-nosed Potoroo
Kinkajou
Northern Flying Squirrel

Shaldon Zoo - Nocturnal House (6 species):
Bengal Slow Loris
Pygmy Slow Loris
Grey Slender Loris
Three-banded Armadillo
Stick Insect sp
Scorpion sp

The zoo also has a nocturnal exhibit for Grey Mouse Lemur and Brush-tailed Bettong elsewhere in the zoo, but the focus of the building is not fully nocturnal, with the indoors for the zoo's squirrel monkey also present.

Cotswold Wildlife Park - Bat House (5 species):
Egyptian Fruit Bat
Seba's Short-tailed Bat
Mongolian Jird
Turkish Spiny Mouse
Spinifex Hopping Mouse

Cotswold has other buildings with multiple nocturnal exhibits, such as Little Africa (Naked Mole Rat and Senegal Galago) and the Siamang House (Grey Mouse Lemur and Straw-coloured Fruit Bat), but as they both have other species in daylight exhibits, it felt somewhat unfair to include them.

Chester Zoo - Fruit Bat Forest (4 species):
Seba's Short-tailed Bat
Rodrigues' Flying Fox
Omani Blind Cave Fish
Turkish Spiny Mouse

This exhibit was closed during my visit, so I could be very much mistaken. I also believe that the Boky-Boky and Grandidier's Vontsira are held in this building, in nocturnal setups, but are behind the scenes.

Hemsley Conservation Centre - Nocturnal House (2 species):
Pygmy Slow Loris
New Guinea Ground Cuscus

Paignton Zoo - Nocturnal House (2 species):
Short-beaked Echidna
Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec

I believe the House is temporarily closed for renovations, and the species selection may have changed quite a bit since my visit. I remember seeing a sloth in there once, but they now seem to be held elsewhere in the zoo. Perhaps a member more familiar with Paignton can inform me here?

Get to know Animals have a nocturnal room with a number of exciting species. @Alwaysevergreen will be able to provide you with a comprehensive species overview.

Beale Park also have a nocturnal house.

Africa Alive Zoological Reserve have two nocturnal exhibits. One houses an Aye-aye and a group of Malagasy jumping rats, the other holds an aardvark pair and a male bat eared fox.

Someone probably has a species list of Bristol's famous nocturnal house, which should probably be included, despite the closure of the zoo.

I think there is a second species of rodent in this building, though I can't remember what it is right now! It might be striped grass mouse? I believe the vontsira are held in an outdoor enclosure, unsure about the boky-boky.

There is also the nocturnal exhibit for aye-aye and Malagasy jumping rat in the Tropical Realm.

Great thread @Kalaw !

British Wildlife Centre has a small Nocturnal House. They used to have some native Bats ( Brown long-eared bat/ Plecotus auritus on my visit last year) Hazel Dormouse, Edible Dormouse and Hedgehog exhibits.

Good thread idea!

Ark wildlife and dinosaur park has recently opened a small single species nocturnal house which has kinkajou.

Hamerton have a nocturnal / reverse daylight house with two toed sloths and three banded armadillo.

Shepreth have a nocturnal space for free flying Egyptian fruit bats, spiny mouse and slow loris.

Rodbaston animal zone, Berkshire animal management centre, Isle of Wight reptilarium, Amazon world, Tropical butterfly house, Lotherton, Ponderosa zoo, Dudley zoo, Birmingham wildlife conservation centre, West mids safari park, Wild discovery, Hoo zoo, Exotic zoo, and Barleylands farm all have nocturnal houses that i have visited, i can remember some of the species in each if you want but there are gaps so they would not be very comprehensive:p

Also, does Newquay still have the small nocturnal house with 2 enclosures?? I remember i think Owstons palm civet and slow loris in there?

Technically speaking, Reaseheath College Zoo have a nocturnal area. However, it is located behind the scenes so this might not count as being a Nocturnal House.

Turns out there is quite a few more than I was aware of! There is no need to type up a complete species list, @pangolin12 , although feel free to do so from what you remember if you wish. Although I do wonder how many of your list have extensive nocturnal houses with multiple species (comparable to London or Wingham) and how many are single rooms with only one or two exhibits (comparable to Hemsley or the Newquay exhibit that you site)?

If I remember correctly the Beale Park nocturnal house contains:
- Ground Cuscus
- Grey Mouse Lemur
- Slender Loris
- Naked Mole Rat
- Rio Fuerte Beaded LIzard

Barleylands, Birmingham, and Amazon world in particular have very nice species lineups, perhaps they would give some of the others a run for their money!

The Bug Parc (formerly BugzUK Parc) in Norfolk has a nocturnal room in one of their three display buildings, which houses the following:

Imperial scorpion, Pandinus imperator
Giant forest scorpion, Heterometrus spinifer
Giant desert hairy scorpion, Hadrurus arizonensis (two displays)
Camel spider, Galeodes araneoides (two displays)
Israeli gold scorpion, Scorpio maurus
Flat rock scorpion, Hadogenes troglodytes
Giant vinegaroon, Mastigoproctus giganteus (two displays)
Two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus
Sulawesi black leg centipede, Scolopendra piceoflava
Hispaniolan giant tarantula, Phormictopus cancerides
Indian ornamental tarantula, Poecilotheria regalis
Net-casting spider, Deinopis sp. ‘Nigeria’
Thorny devil stick insect, Eurycantha calcarata
Vietnamese centipede, Scolopendra dehaani
Chinese giant tiger leg centipede, Scolopendra hainanum
Tailless whip-scorpion, Damon medius

Species list was accurate as of 10th May 2023, with the addition of a single empty display tank.

If I remember correctly the Beale Park nocturnal house contains:
- Ground Cuscus
- Grey Mouse Lemur
- Slender Loris
- Naked Mole Rat

Hi. Yeah so Beale Wildlife Park has The Twilight Zone.

All the above species plus one more secret one lurking around that has never been advertised, nor has a sign as it hasn't been officially announced yet. Has anyone seen it?:D

Another species to go in too some time during summer also I hope.

As of yesterday, Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park has two nocturnal houses

Loris House
Pygmy Slow Loris
Grey Slender Loris
Bettong (?)

Main House
Goeldi's Monkey
Douroucouli
Linne's Two-toed Sloth
Potto
Northern Luzon Cloud Rat

Robaston Animal Zone have a Nocturnal House containing;

Asian Palm Civet 0.1
Kinkajou 1.1
Grey Mouse Lemur 1.2
Pygmy Slow Loris 1.1

Get To Know Animals have a Nocturnal House currently containing;

Striped Skunk 1.1
Lesser Egyptian Jerboa - Believe there is 3 of them, don't know sexes
Fat Tailed Jird - 3 of them, don't know sexes
Gambian Pouched Rat 0.1
Nine Banded Armadillo 1.0
Sugar Gliders - Not sure on number, but at least 4, including one leucistic.
Short-Tailed Opossum 1.0
Cane Toad 1.0
African Bullfrog 1.0

May be something else, but think that's it.

BCA Zoo currently has a Nocturnal house, but this is being turned into the managers office, so they will not have a nocturnal house in the near future.

It currently holds Pygmy Loris 1.1, but these will be moving, whilst the Three Banded Armadillo will be moving to another exhibit soon.

These are the only animals in the Nocturnal House, as the Common Brushtail Possum moved to another collection earlier this year and the Nocturnal Reptile House is no longer in use.

Both the Grandidiers and Boky-Boky are not held in nocturnal settings.
