North American Chimpanzee Population

Zoe at the Los Angeles Zoo had a baby boy either late on Saturday 11/1 or very early on Sunday 11/2. Mom and baby were visible in the Penthouse on Sunday afternoon. LA now has 3 baby chimps.
Brilliant to see LA following the same trend of having a baby boom - their last being over a decade ago.

It's a really good idea, as it works for both the mums and the babies. Being an incredibly social species, the mums will benefit from communal raising of the babies, and the babies themselves will also benefit from the socialisation. Fingers crossed there's more babies to come!

The father of Yoshi's daughter is also Pu'Iwa:

The first unnamed female infant was born to 35-year-old female Yoshi (YO-shee) and 26-year-old male Pu’iwa on Aug. 20, which also happens to be Pu’iwa’s birthday. This is Yoshi’s third offspring and Pu’iwa’s first. The second yet-to-be-named female infant was born on Sept. 9 to first-time mother eighteen-year-old female Vindi. Animal caregivers report that Yoshi and Vindi and their infants are all doing well and bonding.

A healthy male baby was born to JB at the Dallas Zoo on January 26th. Looks like he is being hand raised for now due to not getting the care he needs.

Dallas Zoo on Instagram: "Hi baby! Meet the newest member of our chimpanzee troop – a healthy baby boy born on January 26 to first-time mom, JB. In the weeks after his birth, our animal care teams noticed that JB wasn’t consistently providing the care and nutrition the little one needed, which sometimes left him cranky and weak. After careful monitoring, the team made the decision to step in and hand-raise him to give him the support he needs. Now receiving round-the-clock care from our zoologists, this little one is making incredible progress! He is being bottle-fed every three hours, having his weight and temperature monitored, and receiving consistent, responsive care to help him grow stronger each day. JB is given every opportunity to see and be near her baby throughout this process, as you can spot in the video! Maternal care is a learned skill, especially for first-time moms like JB. Before birth, our teams worked closely with her on maternal training, and while she made great progress, it's not uncommon for first-time moms to need a little extra support as they adjust to this new role. Our goal is always to support both mom and baby in every way possible while giving them the best chance to thrive together. Once the little one is old enough, we plan to reintegrate him back into our chimpanzee troop, where he will continue to grow and learn from his troop members. We’ll be sharing more updates on this little one’s journey, so stay tuned!"
Another chimp birth at Dallas Zoo!

0.1 Amelia gave birth to a healthy male on April 1st!

“With this new addition, we’re hopeful that Amelia’s nurturing instincts will not only support the smooth reintegration of Makutu, our chimp born in January, into the troop when the time is right but also help guide JB as she learns to navigate motherhood on her own journey.”
