North American Common Hippopotamus Discussion/Speculation

It appears as though the Topeka Zoo will be phasing out hippos in the next few years, as they do not appear on the zoo's master plan. There is a restaurant on the master plan map in place of the hippo exhibit.

Vision moving to a facility is definitely a possibility, since he's now 11 and around breeding age. I can see Vision moving to a place that has two females, to start a breeding herd.

With the new zoo in Elk Grove proposing hippos for their master plan, which hippos do you guys think could possibly move up in the far future? I could maybe see Kalo of Dallas & Fritz of Cincinnati going up when they come of age.

@Haley It is unknown if there will even be a zoo in Elk Grove. If the Elk Grove Zoo actually happens, it will probably not open until 2030, most likely even later than that.

Hippos need lots of space too, and now the AZA is recommending bigger bloats in breeding places for Nile Hippos, so if the new Sacramento Zoo (if it happens) gets hippos, then we can expect a giant herd of about 8-10 individuals.

I'm not sure if you knew this, but Fritz and Kalo are actually first cousins, so they would not be an ideal breeding pair.

We don't need to speculate about this zoo just yet, as it hasn't officially been approved yet.

Hippos are in the plans of course but as @Nile Hippo Expert said, it's a while away before the zoo will even be built (assuming there will even be a zoo in Elk Grove).

It's really pointless to speculate that far down the line so I can't say which hippos would possibly be sent there.

It is unconfirmed indeed so far, but things are looking promising. They're hypothetically looking between 2026-28 as an starting opening point, as an incomplete zoo obviously. Of course knowing how construction is rarely on schedule it's anyone's guess.

I don't think I'd go quite that high - yes, they are planning for hippos, but I'd guess they'd end up with 3 or 4 judging by the current population.

Although if they design things right (which based on what I've seen on the project so far I'm optimistic they will), the exhibit will likely be designed such that it is able to display a more naturalistic bloat in the future (upwards of that 8-10 number mentioned), which is something I wish all zoo hippo exhibits were capable of.
