North Carolina Zoo North Carolina Zoo News 2022

I imagine there’s still at least a long term commitment to the six continents + oceans pitch, right? That probably negates the cheapest way of doing the ocean part. Oh well. Maybe they’ll eventually make a proper saltwater aquarium instead, probably in the 2040s.

It seems like the original seven continents and an aquarium model is being followed, albeit extremely loosely, in the zoo's current master plan. The new continent exhibits coming in are smaller in scale than the massive Africa and North America regions but have potential for future expansions.

The fact that the planned "Amazon" exhibit is called such and not "South America" means it'll be more a regional area than a continental one. Jaguars, Golden Lion Tamarins, Toucans, Capybaras being some of the potential animals showcased for this exhibit.

If the zoo ever does get to an aquarium in the future, it would mean another inland aquarium for NC. Before the Greensboro Science Center and Sea Life Charlotte-Concord, the only aquariums in the state were the ones at the coast.

The original 1970s plan also included animals from Europe (like Wisent and Brown Bears), but that concept's likely been dead for a long time as European fauna doesn't get much attention in North American zoos due to similarities between the two continent's wildlife.

I was aware of the seeming shift with Amazon. I hope that’s more akin to Cypress Swamp as just a single exhibit complex in a future region. I am curious to see how they’d tackle Europe with the lack of animals in US collections. Maybe they’d actually import. They have enough land to have breeding populations of hoofstock if they did want to try and properly establish wisent or chamois or something.

But now we’re leaving the realm of news.
