I liked to present some more notiable native wild animal species that can be found in South-East Europe, in the Republic of Macedonia, as country in a transitional zone from Mediterranean to warm-continental climatic-, vegetation- and animal- zones. In the south trough river valleys, Mediterranean species have penetrated inland, and from the north, we already have a more typical European fauna. Some birds belong to the Southern Europe, Middle East, and North Africa only (like Egyptian vulture - Western subspecies).
Otherwise, in this country there are about 70 native species of mammals, 330 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles, 20 species of amphibians, 60 species of freshwater fish, and many invertebrates.
(Mammals)
Eurasian brown bear
Eurasian gray wolf
Golden jackal
Red fox
Balkan lynx (subspecies or even different species, from Eurasian lynx, with only about 30 animals left in the world)
European wild cat
Marbled polecat (vulnerable small carnivore species, and very beautifull)
European otter
Fallow deer
Red deer
Roe deer
Chamois
Muflon (introduced)
European boar (Mediteranean subspecies)
Several bat species
(Birds)
Egyptuan vulture (Western subspecies, only about 40 birds left in all country)
Griffon vulture (about 100 birds)
Cinereus vulture (less than 5 left)
Bearded vulture
Golden eagle
Common shelduck
Black stork
White stork
Dalmatian pelican
European golden oriole

Common european adder (Vipera berus)
Vupera ursini
Cat snake (poisonous colubrid snake)
Malpolon monspessulanus (poisonous colubrid snake, Montpelier snake)
European sand boa (Eryx jaculus)
Elaphe quatorlineata
Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus)
Leopard snake (Zamenis situla)
Dolichopis caspius
Typhlops vermicularis (worm snake)
Platyceps najadum (orange snake)
Coronella austriaca
Natrix natrix
Natrix tessellata
Greek tortoise
Herman's tortoise
At least two turtles species (one introduced)
Many lizard species, including european green lizard, european legless lizard (Pseudopus apodus), Erchards wall lizard (Podarcis erchardii) and Kotschy's gecko (Cyrtopodion kotschyi)
Amphibians.
Fish, mostly endemic for lakes and rivers, like Ohrid salmon trout.
Invertebrates, many, like mediteranean black widow spider (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus), and four species of scorpions (Mesobuthus gibbosus - with most toxic venom of all, Euscorpius italicus, Euscorpius hadzii, and Euscorpius carpathicus), and Mediteranean freshwater crab, Potamon fluviatile.
There were also fossils of giraffes, lions and elephants.
