Taronga Zoo Off-Exhibits

Hi guys,

About 5 years ago I seem to remember seeing a large, dark ungulate in these pens above the orangutans and what seemed to be on top of the gorilla enclosure, directly above it. I was wondering whether these were off-exhibit animals and what animals were/are kept here. The animal, this seems rediculous, looked like a wilderbeest in shape and colour but I know it was not.

Thanks again for your help.

I honestly have no idea what you are talking about. There is nothing on top of the gorillas? and above the orangs are bird avaries? there is deffinalty no where up there that a large dark ungulate could be hidden.

I a positively sure that when you walk up the stair past the orangs (currently chimps) that there were some pens with off-exhibit animals in them, and I remember seeing them.

Unless I am having hallucinations

I think you are referring to an area which housed peccaries a long while ago - just can't think what's there now. Next time I'm at Taronga I'll have a poke around there and see; unless someone on the spot can solve the mystery now.

The area with peccaries was demolished to built the Orangutan enclosure (along with the pheasantry and the Hippo/wild pig yards.

The last resident to live directly above the gorillas was Chori, the African Elephant. And she died long before UrMumzAGoat was born.

Definitely hallucinations.

:p
