Hello! I love South-east Asian animals, and one thing that has always surprised me is the number of pigs found there and how few of them are in zoos. The only ones I know of outside their native range are babirusas, Visayan warty pigs and Bearded pigs. This thread is all about Asian pigs, sort of like Thylacinealive's big cat thread. I'll ask the first question: are any Sulawesi warty pigs kept outside their native range? Being the ancestor of some domestic pig breeds I would think so. I know a pair was brought to Singapore nearly 20 years ago and bred there. What happened to their offspring? Thanks.

You may already know about them but there are small numbers of Javan (Surabaya Zoo) and Philippine (Manila & Avilon Zoos) in captivity in their native countries. Some Javan are part of a breeding project at the Cikananga Wildlife Center and it receives funding from zoos elsewhere. I don't know if there are any Palawan bearded left at the Palawan Wildlife Center. At least until recently there was. Since you labelled your thread "island" I guess you're not interested in pygmy hog but they're at a local breeding center, too. I'm not aware of any Sulawesi warty, Mindoro warty, Buru babirusa or Togian babirusa in captivity today.
 
Does Cikanga actually have the warty pigs or do they support warty pig breeding in Surabaya zoo? Thanks,

As far as I know there aren't any captive banded pigs outside their native countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand). I have seen reports from a few years ago by small North American and East European zoos claiming they had banded pigs. I'm pretty sure these were errors. A bit like the zoos that reported having Heude's pig's a few years ago. When you looked into it they had been confused by its alternative name Vietnam warty pig and actually had... Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs!
 
Visayan (Negros/Panay) warty pigs are kept in larger numbers in Europe and North America. They're prolific breeders. There are also bearded pigs on both sides of the Atlantic, but in much smaller numbers.

Bongorob, hadn't heard that the bearded pigs in London are hybrids. What kind of hybrids? Intra-specific between subspecies (note that genetics actually suggest the traditional subspecies limits in this species are incorrect) or interspecific hybrids with domestic/wild boar?
 
Sorry I don't remember where I got the information, but they are suppsedly intrasubspecific hybrids. I always thought they were pure S.barbatus barbatus .
 
Aren't the males at London castrated?
Anyway I don't belive that there are any potential breeding pairs at the moment in Europe, the female at Berlin is too old, the pait at Munich is too old too.
What's about the females at London?
