ZSL London Zoo Okapi developments?

I noticed today that Elila wasn't on display, neither outside nor in her usual stall inside. Does anyone know if there is any news regarding her pregnancy?

The baby is due this month so it's possible that she's off show to allow the keepers to monitor her closer than they would be able if she was in the public area.

Fingers crossed that everything will go/has gone well this time....

The gorilla can sometimes be seen on the overhead walk way but not while I was there. He has been introduced to the group from what I understand.

Elila (Okapi) gave birth on the 26th of November. I don't have anymore details than that.

EDIT: Sorry I do it appears the calf is a male.

Amazing, I hope all goes well. I want to run down there right away but I guess that would be a bit pointless...

Good news :D
*thread hijack* Has anyone seen the Bristol calf yet? She wasn't out when I visited not long after she was born.

Fantastic news :D Am I right in thinking that this is the first male okapi born in the UK since Mbuti in 2004 at Bristol Zoo?

Also since we are on the subject has the new female calf at Bristol been named yet?

I hope someone's informed Dicky of the good news! :D

Nope Marwell had a male calf born in 2006 called Shomari

Naming of bristol calf, I have no idea but they never rush these things with Okapis.

Thanks for that Taun :) I forget Shomari!

There are photos online of the calf running round the paddock - I don't think the last calf survived long enough to go outside, so this is encouraging.

If anyone is interested photos of the calf can be seen on Flickr by searching 'okapi London Zoo' and selecting most recent.

Has anyone seen the calf at the zoo? Must be bad timing for me , I guess it isn't out all the time.

Is it still too early for an official announcement? (I'm aware of past issues and general issues faced when rearing okapi calves).

London is being really cautious, esp. with their last calf not surviving. I expect an announcement in or around Easter time, to draw a few more visitors in. ;)
