Huggie and Pooh the Syrian brown bears at Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve, are ready for their mate Barney's 31st birthday party today

IT'S going to be a beary, beary good weekend for one lucky zoo animal.

Barney the Syrian black bear, who lives at the Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve, is turning the ripe old age of 31 today.

Bears in the wild only usually live to the age of 20, and up to 30 in captivity.

To celebrate Barney's milestone, the zoo is hosting a special birthday for him, alongside its annual Teddy Bears Picnic.

There will be a birthday cake for Barney, as well as party games.

Zookeeper Kelly Lambe said the secret to Barney's longevity was the tender loving care given to him by zoo staff.

He is an omnivore, and has a regular diet of fruit and meat (with plenty of peanuts).

The 300kg bear came to the Koah zoo six years ago, sent from Perth Zoo.

While Barney has a touch of arthritis in his old age, he occasionally takes dips in the compound's swimming pool with two other bears, Pooh, 18, and his twin sister Huggy, 18.

"Barney still has the occasional playful swim in the pool, so you will see that playful side of him," Ms Lambe said.

Barney's 31st birthday and the Teddy Bear's Picnic is on at 10.30am today at Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve.

I think Bethyl is older than that.

:p

"I don't make the news, I just report it."

Actually I had always had the impression Bethyl was the oldest (from Zoochat!) but I wouldn't know one way or t'other

Do you have any footage? The link sends me to cairns news but there is just stories from today there’s no video or photos?? Would be appreciated :)

This isn't from WIN News, but is some news footage from CWSR:

You'll get a few clips by searching for Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve on YouTube, plus there's a fairly good range of still images in the ZooChat gallery. Hope that helps!

There’s also a number of photos (including several of the bears) in this link:

It’s a real shame CWS closed. It was a thrill to see their largest lion pride, which consisted of a lion and 14 lionesses (an additional four males were held separately). It was Australasian’s largest lion pride at the time.

Barney did really well with his age (was it 2013 he passed away aged 33 or almost. He and sister littermate Missy were so little when they left Adelaide Zoo to move to Perth Zoo in 1981. I think Peter & Yoka Leeflang at Perth Zoo helped raise them when they were still young (they were the foster parents of Orangutans like Puteri and some of her siblings etc too). Poor Missy was euthanised from cancer in 2007 (her and Barney arrived at Mareeba/Koah I think October 2003).

Remember Huggy & Pooh from Mogo Zoo. They and Barney & Missy got a much much bigger living space at CWS like a hectare or even 3 acres (albeit their exhibits at Perth and Mogo were not terrible, just basic, well Barney & Missy's first exhibit at Perth was an old cramped one but luckily was only a few years in that one).
