Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust Orang Utan has stillborn baby

Good grief. I've only just read about Dona 's death at Chester. Has anyone got any good news about orangutans?
 
Shame that. Jersey has Sumatrans doesn't it?
 
It doesn't say exactly what the problem was for Dana- only that she gave birth to a stillborn baby naturally and then she had to be taken to the vet hospital where she was saved- presumably from excessive blood loss?
 
Fortunately 'Dana' (born 25.01.1988) survived, but she is already too old for her first birth.

It was absolutely embarrassing, that Hannover Zoo and the EEP took so many years to transfer 'Dana' to a male, able to breed. Unfortunately 'Kajan' at Hannover never bred successfully.

That is very enlightening. An Orangutan female should really be breeding by the time she is about ten, not 21. That is indeed bad planning by all concerned, they were lucky not to lose her and I wonder what the chances are for her to have a successful birth in the future.
 
Unfortunately I think her chance to have another baby is very low....

Hannover got a new young male from UK to breed with 'Zora' and 'Miri'. I hope they will tranfer the two females to another zoo with a breeding male, if they do not get pregnant during the next year. 'Zora' is already 19 years old and and she never bred before, 'Miri' had a baby at Budapest Zoo 9 years ago....

Stuttgart Wilhelma has the same problem and is not able to solve it and to transfer the young female 'Conny' to another zoo - that is a shame.

Was this recent and do you know the name/origin of this male? Was he from Jersey?
 
That is not right.
Hannover has got a male from France, from La Boissiere. Jambi is born in 1996 and has to breed with Zora. Kaja still lives together with Miri, because he is more interessed in Miri than in Zora
