'"The French government can understand the view of Indonesia and expects to
obtain input from the results of research on palm oil."

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government through the Ministry of
Agriculture conducted a campaign green products (eco-friendly products), oil
palm to the two European countries, namely Spain and France in order to
anticipate the negative issues concerning the commodity associated with the
environment.

Minister of Agriculture Suswono here on Saturday, said the mission
activities of palm oil campaign is to convey information and communicate the
policies and efforts to develop national oil palm industry with the
principles of sustainability (sustainability).

In addition, continued when the results of the visit to Madrid, Spain, and
Paris, France, in order to convey concern and objection to Indonesia to
negative views of NGOs on the development of palm oil importer and the rules
state that had a negative impact on exports of palm oil.

"This activity is in the form of seminars and meetings with relevant
officials in both countries," he said.

In a meeting with the Minister of Environment, Rural Development and
Fisheries Spain, Suswono explain the Indonesian government's commitment in
the implementation of Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil System and the care of
the environmental criteria listed in direct renewable energy (Renewable
Energy Directive / RED) with potential as non-tariff barrier to trade .

Likewise, when meeting with the Minister of Agriculture of France, expressed
concern Indonesia Suswono back against environmental criteria listed in RED.

"The French government can understand the view of Indonesia and expects to
obtain input from the results of research on palm oil which can be used as
an evaluation of policies related to the use of oil in the country," he
said.

In addition to Spain and France, Indonesia will also conduct a similar
campaign to the United States, which is planned through the visit of
Minister of Agriculture on May 23, 2011.

"We will explain clearly how the development of oil palm in Indonesia," he
said.

Besides, he added, it also will deliver an orangutan to the zoo in the U.S.
to demonstrate the government's attention to wildlife-related development of
oil industry.

According Suswono, negative campaign against palm oil Indonesia by developed
countries by raising the issue of environment is actually more based on the
competition of trade not solely environmental.

He said that currently the use of land for oil palm development in Indonesia
is only about six percent of forest area in the ground water that reached
137 million hectares.

Besides, he added, oil palm plantations contribute about 45-46 per cent of
carbon emissions reductions.

Regarding the Indonesian palm oil exports to the EU, Suswono reveals, in
2008 reached 4.36 million tons (2.73 billion U.S. dollars) and then rose to
4.79 million tons (2.16 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009 and 4.06 million tons
in 2010 (2.61 billion U.S. dollars).

While exports of CPO in 2008 as many as 1.76 million tons (1.4 billion U.S.
dollars) rose to 2.36 million tons (1.4 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009 and
decreased to 2:22 million tons (1.77 billion U.S. dollars) in 2010.

I doubt any major US zoo would accept it. Even if some wanted to the amount of heat they would get from anti-zoo groups would be enough to stop it. It would also cause CITES problems. Orangs are CITES I and Indonesia have signed the CITES treaty. Unless captive bred you can't just export them, especially to a country like USA that take CITES seriously and doesn't have the corruption levels of Indonesia. Contrary to the suggestion of Suswono, oil palm plantations are terrible from a conservation point of view. In Sabah, Borneo I have seen the huge oil palm plantations in areas previously covered by pristine rainforest but it has gotten to a point where you don't even have to go there because it easily can be seen on satellite photos :(

I can't see how giving the USA an orang is demonstrating their attention to the habitat loss caused by the plantations. If anything, it seems to be exactly the opposite.

:(

Talk about doublespeak! Cutting down pristine rainforests for monoculture palm plantations actually cuts global warming by 45%??? Do they they really think westerners are that stupid. And, oh yes, the motives of the NGO's (environmental organizations) in protesting oil palm has nothing to do with the environment but is really based in protecting their nation's trade balance. Do the Indonesian authorities honestly believe anyone is going to buy this ludicrous argument?
