Chester's orangs are:

Tuan-male came from Antwerp earlier this year
Martha
Leia
There is another bornean female as well

Puluh-male came from Australia
Subis-born at Chester
Emma-Born at Chester
There are also the young sumatrans, I only know the name of Budi

Sibu will be returning to Chester soon, when I don't know.....

wow u know a lot about chesters orangs - how did u find out about sibu coming back - i have heard nothing on the website of taun - is he still in quartine ? i think the other bay is utara are the mums subis and emma pregnat again >

The zoo hopes to have a baby bornean in around 2008. I was told That Sibu was coming back by a zoo employee. Emma and Subis aren't pregnant yet.

Tuan is still in quarantine in the old house. I know so much about the orangs at Chester because I've been behind the scenes, and I've talked to the orang keepers.

wow bay boreans on the the way - whats it like off show - describe tell more and what else do u know about chester orangs

Auckland Zoo has the regions only Borneo Orang Utan -- two family groups , and
they are planning to breed more from these .

This information is still exactly the same -- no changes ( yet )

Sumatran versus Bornean.

On another thread(london Zooworld) the difference in activity levels between the two orangutan species (or subspecies?) came up.

I've just been reading a Philadelphia Zoo magazine dated 1931. At that time they had both Sumatran and Bornean Orangutans. Even then they recognised the marked differences between them...

I quote- " These huge apes(sumatrans) differ very decidely from any of the Borneo species. They are much thinner of face and body... These animals are as lively as chimpanzees, while the Borneo species are very sluggish "

I couldn't have put it better myself.;)

Male orang utan "Jorong" has arrived from Dublin zoo at Dudley zoo, 12 year old "jorong" will be mixed with Dudley's resident females "Azzimat and "Jazz".

wow, couldn't they have waited until the new facility was built? That ape house is quite literally the pits.

Do you know what happened Dudley's Male?

Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo has 5 but i'm not so good with names. There is one bornean (i think) and her hybrid daughter as one group and the other group is a sumatran male, a female and their son.

That is good news. I imagine their own male 'Ben' is still there but he has finally proved to be a nonbreeder. For very many years he wasn't even in with the females though he has been more recently.

Azimat came originally from Blackpool Zoo. She is the mother of Jaz by Dudley's previous male 'Joe.' Jaz is now about 15 + and never bred from, Azimat has not bred since Jaz was born so its a pretty bad record here. Hopefully 'Jorong's arrival will now quickly change that. I think he was born at Chester and went as a young animal with his mother 'Lola' to Dublin. I think(?) that he has offspring at Dublin...

Yup they had one offspring mujur a young female ... and lola did go to dubln with jorong as a young babie .... any more info on azimat ?
