Hello ZooChatters, this will a thread detailing my trip to Osaka this July. Currently, I have plans to go to NIFREL, Kobe Animal Kingdom and either Kaiyukan or Kyoto Aquarium. This means I might not visit big and outdoor zoos like Tennoji or Kyoto. What do you think about these plans? Also be sure to type any rare species in the Osaka Kyoto Kobe Area.

Anyone know how far Kobe Animal Kingdom is from Osaka central?
I'm not sure about the exact distance, but typically it takes about an hour by train from Osaka station to Kobe Animal kingdom. You might want to check Google Maps for specific details on the distance and travel options to Kobe Animal Kingdom from Osaka central.

Kaiyukan is a far better aquarium than kyoto, i would recommend it as the no.1 facility to visit

Today is my trip to Osaka, my first zoological facility will be NIFREL and I will be heading there tomorrow. Kobe Animal Kingdom will be after NIFREL, followed by a bee farm as well as the Nara deer temple. My final zoological facility will be an aquarium, Adventure World and Himeji Central Park.

Visited NIFREL today, and while it did spread a message of bonding together with living things and most of the zones had interesting exhibits, the tiger and hippo enclosures were quite small and education of the animals was just scattered around. I would still recommend the zoo a visit though.

Visited Kobe Animal Kingdom, here are my thoughts:

Pros:
Wide interaction with animals, whether it be feeding or petting them.
Rare animals and most ABC animals are shown in very interesting ways. Also the zoo boasts an impressive small mammal collection.
First time seeing animals like binturong, sand cat, marabou stork, common gundi, Amami spiny rat, Japanese flying squirrel, striped skunk, western plaintain eater, pudu, smooth fronted caiman, ruddy shelduck, northern carmine bee eater and striped possum, the highlight of the bunch.
The otter sanctuary and Pantanal exhibit were wide and interesting for the animals residing there.
Alright food and good gifts.
Little touches to exhibits like fake rain (I believe) in the shoebill garden.
Conservation efforts towards endemic species like Miyako grass lizard and Amami spiny rat.
Educational information was alright for a Japanese zoo.
Cons:
Small exhibits for pygmy hippos, tapirs and tigers.
Constant music playing.
Most animals looked uncomfortable like the pacing pumas.
Limited hiding spaces for animals.

Overall, Kobe Animal Kingdom was a zoo that was interesting and interactive, with rare species and a jungle like atmosphere. Although most species deserve to get out of the greenhouse, it is still a zoo fun for species hunters, zoo fans and regular folk alike. I give the zoo a rating of 8.2/10.

Today I will be going to Himeji Central Park, a Safari park in Himeji, a city near Osaka. This zoo will provide me with lifeticks like addax, bharal and Cape Barren goose.

Went to Himeji Central Park yesterday, here are my thoughts:
Pros:
Great range of hoofstock
Lifeticks I saw include addax, bharal, roan antelope, markhor, African buffalo, sitatunga, blackbuck and the last radjah shelduck in Japan. (unfortunately, the Cape Barren goose mentioned above died, which means that the Cape Barren goose is extinct in Japan.)
Drive through safari, as it allowed me to get closer to the animals.
Savannah motif was shown.
Well maintained herds of hoofstock.
Nice views from the sky safari.

Cons:
Cages in the walkthrough Safari are very barren and lackluster.
Uncomfortable looking lions, tigers and a sad looking chimpanzee.
Barely any food service.
Lacking educational material apart from the audio guide during the drive through safari.
Barely any hiding spots in the walkthrough safari.

Overall, Himeji Central Park is a safari park that takes you into the savannah while also providing you with opportunities to get closer with the animals. However, it faces the same problem that the majority of zoos in Japan face- small cages under the standards of today’s zoos. If that changes, the safari park will reach its potential of becoming a safari park loved by all. I give HCP a rating of 7.9/10.
