Oshima Park Zoo (Izu Islands, Japan): (10 March 2025)
The Oshima Park Zoo is a small free-entry zoo on the island of Oshima, in the Izu Islands off the coast south of Tokyo. I went round it in less than an hour but you could spend longer (I was fitting it in at the end of the afternoon and had to catch the last bus back to the ferry).
It was a surprisingly good zoo, with very large aviaries and a great rocky enclosure for Aoudads and Ring-tailed Lemurs (said to be the largest primate enclosure in Japan), although on my visit the lemurs were inside their cage to the side. Even most of the smaller enclosures were fine, apart for a very small Capybara cage (from the map it appears this is not normally the animal's entire living space).
The Aldabra Tortoise house, actually more of a tropical house with all sorts of other animals inside, is a bit ramshackle compared to the rest of the zoo, with some cages on the small side.
There are photos of almost all enclosures in the Japan Other gallery: Japan - Other - ZooChat
