Edinburgh Zoo Otto hurt or accidently marked himself on something?

Visited yesterday and noticed something while stopping by at the pigmy hippo's.
Now I am not sure if Otto hurt himself here or managed to get some sort of marker onto him but that looked like blood to me.
Any ideas on this?
He was walking fine incidently and didnt seem to be in any bother so I am assuming if he did do something its nothing too serious.

Owch, definitely looks like he's got a cut somehow. Amazing that animals can get icky looking wounds and then continue on as normal!

OK if no-one else is going to say this then I will: why did you not just tell one of the staff about this?!

Looks like its coming from a very small wound on the shoulder- perhaps caused by a nail, or a jackdaw-type bird? Not a bite from another hippo though- that would be a gash or cut.

um, the staff all go home before closing time? If you were worried enough about it to post it on here then surely you could have found someone at the reception area or somewhere before you left!

Oh looks nasty poor otto i hope ellen hasn't been turning on him!!!!

No problems there!
Ellen and Leishan popped out and when Otto spotted them, thats when he decided to get up and tell them to go back inside, which they did.
Also earlier on they all seemed quite content enjoying the indoor spa bath.

what's wrong with you?.. could you be any more aggressive .. crikey..
go have a cup of tea and calm down

its a reasonable question, "lettuce", I'm not sure why you have a problem with it (?)

it err'd on the side of aggression in my opinion, and why am i getting the "punctuation" treatment .. crikey its only my second post, lets all have a group hug and move on ..

Not much more I can say on the matter, a weekday, after 4:30pm on winter hours, there wasnt anyone around, mansion house was closed also, as was Rainbow landings (which shut at 4).
A couple of people on the forum have links to the zoo, thought they might pick up on it if there was a major concern.

I have frequently left zoos during winter at the end of the day through a turnstile exist, no keepers in sight and the shop/entrance closed. It doesn't mean the keepers have gone, when I was a keeper we'd generally be keeping a low profile so that the last few people would go home...

well exactly .. it's NOT Scorgs job to welfare these captive creatures, he happened to take a photo , noticed something out of ordinary .. tried to find someone to help .. tried many more site areas than someone who had not been there before and as he couldn't find anyone, he posted online knowing members of the zoo come on here .. WELL DONE SCORG... i'm sure .. being how icy it is here .. the hippos would have been taken inside not long after 16:30 anyway, and would have been checked. i live barely half a mile from Chester zoo and i know how committed the keepers are AND how cold it is here at the moment AND being a member how much the animals are checked when taken in .. lets stop this blatant trolling from the other side of the world... i'm sorry Childonias, you may historically have been an active member with lots of posts but without localised knowledge you are just being ignorant of the locality and plain rude, give me come back n all, that that's fair enough , but don't imply another member is in some way negligent .. thats silly .... SARCASM MODE ON > please provide punctuation here <

ooooh-kay then. Interesting response from someone who just wrote "what's wrong with you?.. could you be any more aggressive .. crikey.. go have a cup of tea and calm down". You seem to be taking this very personally.
Two points re your post quoted above:
1) "lets stop this blatant trolling from the other side of the world" - I'm not quite sure how you can equate questioning why the staff were not sought out regarding the matter, with "blatant trolling"
2) "i'm sorry Childonias, you may historically have been an active member with lots of posts...." - historically? I didn't know I was only an active member historically. Is there something I should know?

You are quite right that I have no local knowledge of Edinburgh Zoo. I have never been there. That is why I was asking the questions! I was genuinely intrigued as to why someone would see and photograph something that appeared to be quite a bit of bleeding from an apparent wound and not tell the staff, but instead post it on a forum the next day. However from your first few lines posted above, you are quite obviously much better aquainted with Scorg's thought processes and actions on the day, and as I am apparently the only person who was wondering why said actions were taken I will not ask any more questions.

From more than 10 years experience with "pachyderms" I can say that the lesion looks superficial and not to worry.

Exactly so why the hell are we discussing this?

lettuce@Sorry but your the one being aggressive here, you joined up to have ago at someone who asked the question about someone who was that worried about a scratch that they had to post it on here after not being able to find someone at the zoo in question.

Or is it that you have you created a second account for yourself with your recent comments about our NZ friend?

Yet again I am forced to read another thread of childish squabbles, while my only objective was to find out what had actually happened to the hippo.....which I still don't know!!

It's a forum, post what you like but please somehow title your posts 'childish retort' or something so I know not to read them.....
