I haven't been a member too long so I'm not sure if this has already been done yet. If it has could someone re-direct me to it, or if enough people think its time to open it up again than please comment.

I'm curious to hear from all of you about the uncommon or very rare animals that you have seen in zoos that have a relatively small population in captivity. I haven't been to many zoos so my list will be fairly small but there are some animals on there that I'm very proud to have seen. Post a list of the animals that you are most privileged to have seen. These animals can be any kind, and any status. It doesn't have to be endangered animals, just animals that you don't see a lot of. For instance you could have a list like: Musk ox, marsh mongoose, gray mouse lemur...ect. These animals aren't threatened but are rarely exhibit in zoos. Some of you lucky ones could have a list like: Dwarf Cassowary, Saiga, Sungazer... Also keep in mind that a species listed as uncommon in one area might not be in another. I know that there are a lot more gerenuk in American than there are in Europe.

I will most likely update my list but the species that come to mind are:

Steenbok
White-lipped deer
Mishmi Takin
Babirusa
Bushpig
Congo buffalo
Somali wild ass
Northern white rhinoceros
Red uakari
Paca
Kiwi

Most of these are rare for just the U.S. since many European and Australian Zoos have very nice collections.
Congo Buffalo (when they were still at Brookfield Zoo)
Walrus (when they still were still at Brookfield Zoo)
Black-Footed Cat (Brookfield Zoo which now has kittens)
red-faced spider monkey (Brookfield Zoo)
sooty mangabey (Brookfield Zoo)
southern hairy nosed wombats (Brookfield Zoo)
Brown Kiwi (at Columbus)
Tiger Quoll (at Columbus)

White-lipped Deer (at Lincoln Park Zoo)
Persian leopard (at Lincoln Park Zoo)
Pallas Cat (Lincoln Park and Columbus)
