Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2020

A new male Eurasian moose (Alces alces alces), named Thor, 8 months old and from the Czech Republic (it didn't say which zoo) has arrived at Pairi Daiza. He will live with the female Oléa that arrived last year when The Last Frontier section was completed. They share an exhibit with wapitis.

Two BIG cervid species in the same enclosure? No problem at all or could there be a problem with the bulls? Any experiences from other zoos keeping this two species together?

Until now they only had females of either species.

Since a few days it is possible to book the accomondations of the new 'Land of Cold'-world.

Except of the ones for penguines - which will open in july - all accomondations are available from the re-opening of the park on March 21st onwards.

One can debate whether it is needed and good for the animal or other visitors to have an accomondation within a zoo close to the animals - however the pictures look amazing and I already look very much forward staying there for the first time in april.

Attached a few pictures from the Pairi Daiza facebook page:

Pairi Daiza informed yesterday via Facebook that they have done major changes to their elephant enclosure - increasing the outside area from 19.000m² to 33.000m² and adding in total 11 temple buildings into their enclosures (looking like the temples in Bagan at Myamar) with enrichment features for them.

Each of the temples contains small windows in which the elephants can activite mechanisms for e.g. starting a water shower or getting some food.

There are still various questions open however:
  • What will happen to the american buffalos whose current enclusore is mainly impacted by the expansion for the elephants
  • How will the visitors be able to see the Extended elephant enclosure - most of it is currently only visible from the train going through the park (like the 2 bull enclosures today)
  • Will there be other animals be added - either within the same enclosure or at the two smaller enclosures at the 'Temple of Ani' - on French forums people are speculating about gaurs and indian rhinos

The works going on in the Australian zoo will see the kangaroo walkthrough enlarged and a new wombat enclosure will also be constructed here. This means the wombats will finally move out of their Indonesian home.

A number of the tree ferns had to be removed for this and can now be seen in the Oasis greenhouse.

...with only 11 days until the re-opening of Pairi Daiza I'd like to provide a further overview regarding the various new developments / changes in the park.

Overall it is quite difficult to get a comprehensive picture - despite the fact that PD provides something new for the upcoming season every day - most the news are either already known births or fragments of changes.

Elephant enclosure

No official news since february 24th - however on a landscape picture one could see at least 2 large cranes in the background (at the elephant enclosure) which have not been required to built the small Bagan temples. Speculations are that either the indoor building could be expanded or that they started building some kind of hotel in that area, too.

Giant aviary

Today they informed that they have made major changes to their existing giant aviary (100m Long, 30m wide, 15m high) - by changing the share of surface covered by water from 15% to 40% in order to allow new animals who like water to join soon (not specifying which new species they are talking about)...

Land of cold

Little new Information is getting communicated yet regarding the upcoming new land of cold - only two pictures have been published recently - showing a part of one of the two polar bear enclosures and the view from one of the appartments into the enclosure.

No news yet regarding the polar bears itself - especially from where and by when the animals will come.

Only communication recently was regarding the walrusses - initiated by Hagenbeck Hamburg however - from where ayoung male (Thor) plus there femals originally from Valencia that have been at Hamburg the last few months for breeding purposes will move to Pairi Daiza mid of March.

New parking area

The new parking lot - covered by solar power panels - is advancing very well as visible on the first pictures published...

This is the aviary at the top of the hill with the rope bridge inside? Or the Australian one?

Presumably they will want both species(Polar Bears/Walruses) in situ, acclimatised to their enclosures and ready to be on display by opening day? (21st of the month) If that is so they are on a pretty tight schedule now if neither have arrived yet...

Regarding the polar bears it could well be that they are already there - but have just not been communicated yet.

Regarding the walrusses - Hagenbeck wrote in their communication some days ago that 'Thor' - the first walruss ever born in Germany - will leave by mid of March.

Overall I agree the acclimatisation period seems to be quite tight - especially if the polar bears would not yet be there...
