Area: 200 m2 (within a townhouse in city center)

Papilonia is a franchise chain of (soon to be 6) live butterfly exhibits in Czechia. It´s usually a single large heated room with tropical butterflies imported from professional farms and decorated by live vegetation. Some of them keep a few additional animals like zebra finches or a turtle.

It´s increasingly popular business model, some of those sites sell 100k tickets annually. I warn other zoochatters - they are not worth their entrance fee.

How is it possible that people pay so much money for a few butterflies when they are even more expensive than major zoos in Czechia?

Looks interesting, but as mentioned the admission fee is overpriced. Within the same city is Zoo Ostrava whose summer ticket costs 160 CZK (€6.41 or £5.47), considerably cheaper than Papilonia, and the winter ticket is even less at 110 CZK (€4.41 or £3.31). How they manage to sell 100,000 tickets per year is beyond me - they must have an excellent marketing department.

They are tourist traps. But it doesn´t hurt that Czechs like exotic butterflies obviously.

The first day went ok - with 2300 paying visitors.

Watching pics and videos posted - they exhibit ca 30 butterfly species. Plus few zebra finches (color mutations), Japanese quails, goldfish and turtles (probably yellow-bellied slider + other ? slider).
