Peking Robins

Just read this from the Birdland and Gardens facebook page -

‎4 Pekin Robins (2 male, 2 female) have arrived

20 UK zoological collections (17 of them BIAZA collections) jointly organised and funded the rehoming of 154 x Pekin Robins (Leiothrix lutea). These specimens were all confiscated by the Belgian authorities from a Belgian bird dealer after he was unable to prove that they were captive bred.

It is believed that they may have been trapped illegally from a feral population established in France.

After spending 3 months at a Belgian government funded rescue facility they were caught and boxed individually for their 8 hour journey by road to the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow where they were collected by zoos from across the UK.

All the Robins arrived at their final destinations in good health where they will now play an important role by injecting genetic diversity into the current captive population held in UK zoos.

EDIT -
My question is does anyone on here know where the others have gone in the UK and how many to each collection

I definitely member seeing that Exmoor Zoo recieved at least a pair, along with some of the 113 three-horned chameleons that are also being rehomed after being rescued.

Lovely looking species :) always good for more genetic diversity to be introduced into the UK captive population.

As posted above Wingz have taken in 5 pairs as well as a military macaw.
