Chester Zoo Philippines exhibits and Zoo Days

I think it's a drainage issue. The mound in the centre of paddock is in good condition because the water runs off. But the low part alongside the public path was a real mess when I visited three weeks ago: Patna was having to be very careful in the deep mud near his wallow.

I just don't think in the longterm the paddock can maintain a pair of rhinos using it and also support the antelope and deer as well. Even if its properly drained the rhinos will cause the grass to die off, causing the mounds to become bare earth and the lower areas a quagmire. (Mind you, Blackbuck aren't found anywhere near rhino in the wild anyway ;) )

I Guess it wont be long then until the Blackbuck go. The Deer are a rare species though so hopefully the zoo will keep them.

The area by the Philippine Spotted Deer was closed today. Maintenance staff were removing shrubs with a tractor and loading them on to a lorry. There are no hornbill aviaries and the ground has been cleared apart from a small tree or two. The bridge from the lions is now complete as far as Flag Lane. They're probably going to start the other half and then put the Flag Lane crossing bit in last to connect it all up.

Does this mean Chester is planning on relocating all its Phillipine species to the one spot mentioned earlier on the thread .. here?

No, I don't think so. I assume they're moving the philippine deer away from the construction site, to give them some peace...

I think the deer were still there. It was impossible to tell. All the work was taking place in the public areas.

I think Blackbuck are extremely attractive- I'd hate to see Chester's go- any further than to a different paddock!

There isnt any paddock for them to go though is there execpt the one i mentioned earlier and even that is sometimes used by the zebras and oryx.

The zebra/oryx paddock has the ability to be seperated close to the Przewalski's Horses, if I remember correctly...

They both use the house adjoining the sand pit, but the paddock which has the other house is usually empty...

There is also two paddocks used by the przewalski horses, I guess they could go in one of them instead...
