Could this animal - seen in China - be a Japanese sea-lion or an escaped Californian sea-lion ?

Yeah, that is very fascinating, but also saddening at the same time. Thank you for sharing this here.

Pardon my digression, but I did a search for Japanese sea lion specimens/material in natural history museums, it on VertNet it shows that Naural History Museum London has 8 specimens.

As you will see on the species Wikipedia page, the Osaka Tenoji Municipal Zoo in Osaka, Japan has a taxidermied specimen on display. Japanese sea lion - Wikipedia
