Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne 2010

visited a rather cold Port Lympne today, a few changes and updates.

Firstly, keepers said that Ingrid (siberian tiger) is showing the first signs with regards to behaviour that she was showing when she fell pregnant before, and all are hopeful that she is again. He also mentioned that the snow leopards either have young or are expecting... can't remember which (thought they only had one at the moment though?).
Kruger has most definately been mixed with the girls as all three were in the grass paddock this afternoon, and has been mating with one of them (can't remember which), they will soon be testing for pregnancies i was told.
Very young moloch gibbon on the monkey walk.

The timber wolves that were at the entrance to the park are in an enclosure on the African Experience next to where the trucks stop for the discovery zone. The bush dog enclosure here is being re done. The Iberian wolves are in the old timber wolf enclosure. In the courtyard area outside the Discovery Zone, a new enclosure has been built which looks very much like a new meerkat enclosure, and their current enclosure is empty.

Samira the disabled lion has been moved from the bottom of the park up to the enclosure behind the snow leopards up the hill, where the cheetah(s) were first kept.

Five new empty vivariums have been placed in the Discovery Zone with plastic dart frogs inside - this kept many visitors amused. They pygmy marmoset family has grown by one. Some more new species here include, false water cobra, green tree python, berber skink. New tarantula species are also being kept.

All but three of the Roan antelope herd are now on the African Experience. I couldn't get close enough to be able to distinguish which species, but there is also a lone buffalo on the African Experience, along with two white red lechwe. They are trying to encourage the ostrich to breed by adding various sand 'pits' throughout the area.

The baboons were actively using the mixed exhibit (all be it without rhino actually in there).

The young black rhino calf is out enjoying the sun, but in an in-accessible paddock so can only be viewed from afar.

New open topped enclosure next to the bison paddock is still not finished.
There was one male banteng in the old gaur paddock behind the elephants. They now have another scottish wild cat and have added a raised walkway for them out of the enclosure, across the path, via the back of the elephant paddock and back again.

Lots of trees were being cleared along the main path leading from the entrance to the elephants, presumably for new enclosures. There were various other telegraph poles being put up around the park, presumably marking new enclosures.

The only lions on show were Milo, Moonlight, Jabir and Samira.

Will update if i got forgot anything :)

Yes, the cheetahs are in the enclosure formerly occupied by mained wolves opposite the red river hogs before you get to the elephant section. I think they are both males; at least one of which came from Whipsnade last year I think.

2.1 black footed cat have arrived at the park from Belfast, i believe they are all brothers and sisters

This is FANTASTIC news, since I will be returning to Port Lympne this September, and cats are my thing. They must certainly have the best cat collection now in the UK and one of the best in Europe.

Wonder where they will house the Black-footed Cats . I believe their previous efforts with the species a long time ago at Howletts failed because they did not have the correct dry-atmosphere indoor housing needed .

The black-footed cats at Howletts were housed in a purpose-built wooden house comprised of a row of small units each with a window. I don't know whether the humidity was correctly controlled. The house is in the woodland walk and has largely held small pythons since (after the adult pythons by the gorillas bred).

A 3-year old female Black Rhino , Zawadi , born Berlin Zoo , arrived at Port Lympne in March 2010 . There are 21 Rhinos between the 2 collections now with 30 births .

Howletts and port lympne have a new website, on which it liosts port lympne as having Arctictis binturong that i believe to be new to the collection.

A female Giant Anteater is arriving from Zoo Parc Beauval in France in a couple of weeks. She is called Fidji and will be paired with the park's resident male, Zen who came from Warsaw last year

EDIT: My mistake. She is going to Howlett's not Port Lyme.

I am trying to see if there is interest in having a ZooChat Meetup at Port Lympne on Sunday, September 26 (2010), which is when I will be there. (My schedule is fixed, so it is then or never for me). I have posted it in the "Events & Meetups" forum, with a link below, but thought I would put a reply here so more people can see it.

If you are interested, please DO NOT REPLY ON THIS THREAD. Follow the link below and reply there. Thanks!

Port Lympne update from their website:
Gorilla | Rhino | Zebra | Animal Transfers | The Aspinall Foundation

Keepers at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, Kent, had a busy time last week, with four large animal transfers taking place across just two days. A rhino, a zebra and two gorillas were transferred to new homes while keepers welcomed a new Tapir to the park. These movements are part of a regular exchange of animals between The Aspinall Foundation's two parks, Howletts and Port Lympne, and other zoological institutions, which maximise captive breeding opportunities and helps prevent inbreeding.
Black rhino Manyara headed West to Paignton Zoo in Devon on Wednesday. The seven year old male was sedated before being coaxed into a crate by keepers. The groggy 1 tonne pachyderm was then hoisted onto a trailer and towed down through the parks 100 acre African Experience Safari, while other animals looked on.

Two male gorillas, BuBu aged 12 and Djumbah aged 13 set off to Sosto Zoo, Hungary on Thursday. They were put under sedation before being loaded into special crates and the custom van ready to drive them to Hungary. They will be accompanied by their keeper Helen Roberts who will help them acclimatise to their new surroundings.

New arrival, a 2 year old Malayan Tapir, arrived from London Zoo on Wednesday. It is hoped that he will act as the new breeding male at the park, and with the biggest collection of these animals in the UK, he will have his work cut out.

A five year old Grants Zebra stallion named Flynn was also moved on Friday to a breeding group near Bristol. After a sedation and a quick foot and teeth check by the veterinary team, he was lifted by keepers into the trailer that will carry him to his new home.

1. They are really clearing out their surplus male Gorillas now. 4 have (I think)already gone to La Boissiere in France from Djala's group, while the 'big five' in the round bachelor house are destined for Rostock later this year. This will only leave two adult males there; 'Timbou' and 'Ujiji' (who are in seperate enclosures) by my reckoning. I had thought maybe 'Djumbah'- because of his genes- would in time become the new silverback leader for the maleless 'Kijo' group at Howletts but evidently not if he's going abroad. I can't see which male they might use for that group now...

2. Interesting they've received a tapir from ZSL. perhaps relations have thawed a bit, but maybe still only moves FROM ZSL are okay.

3. Zebra to where? Noah's Ark, or the private Zebra lady, or somewhere else again?

It says that 'Flynn' has gone to a breeding herd . I think the private collection only has surplus stallions . Noah's Ark was criticised because they were producing sub-species hybrids from their zebras , so perhaps this move is to sort out that problem .

Yes, I noticed it said 'breeding herd' so thought Noah's Ark was the more likely. So maybe NA's (previous) other stallion might now go to the other lady?

What's the relationship with NAZF and Longleat? Flynn was born in 2005 at Longleat before going to Port Lyme in 2006/2007. Would Longleat still have had a say in where he was moved too after he left the park providing he was on breeding loan?

I imagine Longleat would still be consulted over his move from PL.

Hi: Does any-one know all the individuals that are in Djala's group ?

RE:Pertinax, Do you know which individuals are of have moved to La Boissiere in France?
