Possibly extinct species

Hello everyone,

I'm new and a bit lost on the forum, so I don't know if this subject has already been dealt with or if this is the right place, but anyway.

I've discovered that according to a certain site, the IUCN has created a new category of ‘possibly extinct’ species, i.e. species presumed extinct but where, recently, evidence of their existence has come to light (calls, hair, etc).

However, I don't think the IUCN site confirms this and I haven't found any serious evidence. I rely on your experiences and opinions, what about this category?

The IUCN doesn't use possibly extinct as a separate category in itself but they do use it as part of their classification in terms of stats in order to draw inference about trends.

The nine categories remain

Not Evaluated, Data Deficient, Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild and Extinct.

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species

Tables 3 & 4: Summaries by taxonomic group
Tables 3 and 4 are organized by taxonomic group. These should be used to see, for example, the numbers of globally threatened mammals, birds and amphibians (Table 4 is an expanded version of Table 3).

These tables include number of species tagged as 'Possibly Extinct' (CR(PE)) and 'Possibly Extinct in the Wild' (CR(PEW)). These figures are included to give an upper estimate for total number of recently extinct species on The IUCN Red List. Combining the total numbers of EX and EW species gives the total number of actual extinctions recorded (since 1500 AD); when CR(PE) and CR(PEW) species are also included, the resulting figure is an estimate of number of recent extinctions when uncertainty is taken into account.
