Chester Zoo Primates

Just wondered if anybody knew if the zoo was planning on bringing in anymore primate species in the near future? Personally I would like to see a troop of Baboons.

Only ones I know of are gorillas. A Monkey Islands keeper did mention something else at the start of the year, a guenon I think, but I can't remember now.

Didn't the zoo used to keep them in Monkey Islands?

Do any zoo's have red capped mangabies?

Colchester maybe? I think they call them Cherry capped mangabeys, so they could be the same thing.
Edit: According to wiki they're the same thing, so Colchester do have them.

Thanks for that ashley, saw them on a programme a few weeks ago in the wild an they looked really interesting. Would be good to see them at Chester especially as they are vulnerable.

Just incase anybody was wandering what a Red-capped Mangabey looked like :p

Yeah I saw that. I felt like I wanted to shoot the presenter in the face though... Sorry lol.
Nice looking monkeys :)

I dunno, got bored after they got washed out of the tree house (which they built by destroying some of the monkey's habitat... just saying... :p)

Newquay also have red capped mangabey's, zootierliste still list chester as having campbells guenon! I know they had them in the past but I doubt they still have them (?)

Red capped/crowned or Cherry crowned Mangabey are one and the same- a subspecies of the more uniformly coloured Sooty Mangabey. There are only two groups in the UK currently, at Colchester, and Newquay who have a pair or trio. Both groups were imported at seperate times from Europe.

They are very colourful and make an interesting display. On the Continent at least one zoo(Munster?) displays them mixed with Gorillas so all things are possible.

I would prefer to see this species at Chester instead of the Sulawesi macaques, which are very widely kept in the UK. Chester have three groups of 'black' monkeys and two of them are of rather similar macaques. A different species like Red capped Mangabey would add more variety to the house I think.

I think a large group of langurs would really thrive on the island, javn or evern dusky lea langurs.

All the Langur species make very good displays, being colourful and active and they usually breed freely too. They would do very well on one of Chester's islands, I'm sure.

The Campbell's Guenons were kept off-show after they were removed from Monkey Islands - I've no idea if they are still at the zoo.

When Monkey Islands first opened there was some talk of mixing a langur species with the Lion-tailed Macaques (I think it was mentioned in an article in Ratel). Obviously nothing came of this.

According to the stock list they still had 0.2 on 31.12.08, but none listed currently on ISIS.

I don't think the indoor areas of Chester's house are large enough to each hold groups of more than one species, without fighting occurring.

The Campbell's Guenons were removed becuase some of the young male mandrills were harrassing them and preventing them from feeding. They went off show sometime last summer. Since they are no longer on ISIS it seems as though a new home has been found for them.

If all the chimps are moving into the Heart of Africa, perhaps new species could move onto the chimp island?
I agree with LeeMac13 Baboons would be great perhaps they could go here the island would need things done to it or even easier add the guenons and other species into the island.
It could be used very well :)

With the eventual opening of the heart of Africa, surely that would take the emphasis of a west African area based around the chimp islands, cattle house and okapi area away from those locations.
