Taronga Zoo Private zoo for APEC wives

Saw this on the news:

ANIMALS from Taronga Zoo will be moved to Garden Island so the wives of APEC leaders can have a private viewing away from tourist hordes.

I'm not happy about this...surely there's a degree of distress any time an animal is moved. Obviously there are times this can't be avoided, but I get the feeling this isn't one of those times...

i think its a great idea- rmember we are not moving elephnats and girfaffe, but repti;les and mammals that are natives that are used for education programs at school. i have been to such progra, mss and they are great and schools pay a ncie little fee, but imagine the apec leaders wives- they would be payting heaps more- well the organises to taronga- it's money, and alot nicer environment than 30 screaming kids. these animals are adapted to these sort of things

adctually this was a great idea to move them away, a news article i just read said they are moving the animals away, to avoid a huge securtiy blitz at zoo. thats great, imagine all taronga needs now is a million helicopters buzzinga round,a nd heaps of guards and crap. it alos confirms the animals are part of the travelling zoomobile, and looks to be only natives.

the animals in question are part of the zoos education collection who travel out on Zoo mobiles all the time. These animals are so used to the attention they dont even bat an eylid and i can say this truthfully as i have been out on with the zoomoblie a couple of times now and as soon as any of the animals show any signs of distress they are taken away.

i think its a great idea to remove all the crap that APEC brings with it(ie security, press etc) away from the zoo itself and put it somewhere were it can be contained. it saves the rest of the zoo animals and the keepers alot of stress

I fully agree with zoo boy and torie - this is a great opportunity for the zoo to promote native wildlife, and the role of the zoo, in a secure, non-threatening environment, with animals that, as torie says, are used for outreach programs and school visits on a regular basis. This is managed in a very professional way, and is a very highly regarded program.

It also removes the massive security concerns associated with the APEC meeting from the zoo and its visitors.

Thanks all for the response. Glad to hear they're not shipping a whole bunch of animals to a makeshift zoo out there, and I think the zoo mobile is a great system, particularly for promoting proper consideration and respect of animals in school kids.

Of course I agree that overloading the zoo with security and press would be a bad idea, but where does the assumption that they would even visit the zoo come from? I guess the exposure is a good thing but I can't see any positives coming directly from this. So APEC wives get to pat some kangaroo's, cuddle a koala, go 'oooh' 'aaah' and then fly back home with hubby in the private jet. Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but that's where it ends as I see it.

think of the meony and media attention involved- these wives have pretty pics, ppl go o cute animals, lets take kids.

not to mention- if milion of dollars are spent on the rest of apec, who says zoo isnt getting a nice little sum of cash to travel so far around. not to metion rich chicks, going ooo cute, lets adopt and sponser and donate.

i was alos thinking management one here, i reackon the wives wanted to go to taronga, yet management said no, to much crap along as mentioned above. just a thought. go management in this case
