Proposed captive elephant reform (?)

I wouldn't totally write off the article. Goldsmith has a strong voice. Elephant husbandry and accommodation has improved tremendously over last 50 years. And the work done in the UK to treat the herpes virus is fantastic. We need this work and an ark of captive animals to prevent species extinction.
Chester's accommodation is ok but for the future needs to be so much bigger and better. Looking at the video of the Ringling herd going to White Oak Florida last month, shows what can be done . I have written to my MP on that basis.
We cannot deny future generations the ability to see and marvel at the world's wonderful wildlife.

According to the sun, UK will be passing a law that will prohibit the importation of elephants into the country. The petition for the law was led by the Born Free Foundation. This law will have a huge affect on UK zoos that house elephants as well as the EZA’s elephant breeding program. According to the Born Free Foundation, the importation ban will lead to the end of elephants in UK zoos. Love the fact they state the "average" age is 17 years!!!! What a load of *****t stirrers someone send a wooded spoon they've probably broken theirs!!!!
 
The Daily Mail article also mentions the following:

This policy is part of wider zoo reforms, due to be announced as part of the Kept Animals Bill later this year.

Government officials told the Daily Mail that the use of animals solely for entertainment will be phased out.

So there's probably even more trouble ahead for zoos than "just" the elephant ban.

This could well be the beginning of the end for UK zoos.

If even conservative politicians are now jumping on the animal rights idiocy bandwagon, the writing is probably on the wall for zoos in the UK.

So if animals can’t be used for entertainment, will that be the end of horse racing and show jumping?
 
The way I read this, nothing has been decided yet. Apparently an ‚insider‘ has leaked what he believes is going to Happen in a couple of months.

This is what happens when the Prime Minister is married to an animal rights campaigner.
 
Banning importation of wild elephants is very different from banning zoos from keeping them. Which is it that is being talked about here? One or both? Presumably in reality just the former. Places that keep non-breeders would eventually have to go out of elephants if such a ban was implemented, but it would not affect breeding groups longerterm. And when was the last time any elephant from the wild was imported into the UK? Must be several decades ago now.

As the tile of this thread says the Banning of Importation of elephants is the topic. The ban is not just on wild elephants but on elephants from other zoos not in the UK.

I would hope that it is solely the beginning of the end for elephants in UK zoos and that it will not impact other species held.

Of course not, that is a class-based hobby (and the Royal family apparently like it) and so will stay.
