Pueblo Zoo - Species List (May 2025)

The Pueblo Zoo, located in Pueblo City Park in southern Colorado, first opened in 1933 and is currently owned and operated by the Pueblo Zoological Society in partnership with the City of Pueblo. I’ve put together a comprehensive species list for the collection, noting subspecies where appropriate to provide more taxonomic detail. Except for the invertebrates, Hilaire’s side-necked turtle, Geoffroy's side-necked turtle, and red-footed tortoise, I have followed the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species for all common and scientific names. For clarity, I have divided the collection based on the Zoo's major exhibitions. All mixed-species exhibits are grouped together as well.

Disclaimer: In the saltwater reef tank in World of Color, signage includes corals and invertebrates alongside the fish in the habitat. I was unable to identify the coral, and I did not see any invertebrates. The signage did not include scientific names also. Therefore, I did not include these in my species list. Below follows what was listed on the exhibit's signage and my best attempt at adding scientific names:
  • Brittle star sp. (Class Ophiuroidea)
  • Starfish sp. (Class Asteroidea)
  • Peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni)
  • Turbo snail sp. (Genus Turbo)
  • Duncan coral (Duncanopsammia axifuga)
  • Cauliflower coral (Genus Pocillopora)
  • Leather coral (Family Alcyoniidae)
  • Toadstool coral (Genus Sarcophyton)
  • Disc coral (Fungia fungites)
  • Chalice coral (Family Pectiniidae)
  • Mushroom coral (Family Fungiidae)

Thanks for the list of species and it's interesting for me to see some of the changes since I toured the zoo in 2014. Canada Lynx and Raccoon are gone from The Woods, Waterbuck and Kirk's Dik-dik (side yard) are gone from African Plains (but Speke's Gazelle are a nice addition), Serengeti Safari has expanded as before it was basically just African Lions, and Sun Bears are gone from Asian Adventure.

Unfortunately, the zoo is really struggling at the moment and there's a fear it will lose its AZA accreditation in 2028 unless there's some financial aid. City funding has been slashed by 30% in the space of two years, there's huge staff turnover, and the zoo barely maintained its accreditation in 2023. Here's an article with more details:

Facing a funding crisis, the Pueblo Zoo could go 'extinct' without more help from city
