In year 2022 for the first time ever, a breeding colony of almost 40 pairs of pygmy cormorants has been observed. This colony is located at a small island Ivan on man-made lake that is part of Vestonicka nadrz protected area - in southern Moravia region.
Population of Pygmy cormorant is undergoing steady increase in Europe and this species is growing its range. Czechia is currently the most northern place where it breeds. The nearest colony is at Neusiedler See in Austria.
Last year, we saw a vagrant vawe of young pygmy cormorants sweeping west from their usual breeding grounds in Hungary, showing themselves at many places in Germany and even in Netherlands. One large flock settled at Ivan among a large colony of black-crowned herons, white herons, grey herons, common cormorants and spoonbils. This flock remained there whole winter and now started to breed.
