A state-of-the-art captive breeding and release programme has been started for the endangered Queen Alexandra's birdwing butterfly in Papua New Guinea by the Swallowtail and Birdwing Butterfly Trust. The breeding laboratory will be built on the Higaturu palm oil plantation and will be coupled with the conservation of the surviving forest fragments and habitat enrichment by planting Dutchman's pipevine plant (the butterflies' food plant) along the margins of palm oil estates.
