I recently returned home from a week on the Gold Coast in Queensland. While I was there I visited Currumbin, Australia zoo and Seaworld.

Currumbin
I haven't visited Currumbin for 7 years and I was looking forward to returning. Unfortunatly I was disappionted with Currumbin this time around. The small reptile area near the enterance was looking very run down and in the need of a clean up. On my last visit it was very clean and new. The mertens water monitor exhibit was now home to a lace monitor and in just didn't look right. The water in the fish and tortiose ponds was dirty and this made viewing difficult.
It appeared that some of the avairies have been removed and the range of birds had greatly decreased. I did get to see a double eyed fig parrot so it wasn't all bad.
There was a new tassie devil exhibit and a new wombat exhibit so it looks like money is being spent and with a bit of a clean up it might return to being a great place to visit.

Australia zoo
I loved it. The place is spotless. All the paths and gardens are well kept. Every time you turn around there is a staff member with a broom or rake cleaning up.
Although they do not have a great range of animals, the ones they have are all in spacious enclosures that are clean and well maintained. Even the exhibit for the feral red fox was nice.
The tiger exhibit is like dreamworlds tiger island with keepers in the exhibit with the tigers.
The show in the crocosium was entertaining. I though it would be all "crikey and streuth and little beauty" but it was an enjoyable show with free flight macaws, cormarants, herons and a big jabiru as well as a snake in the pool and the croc feeding as well as the elephants being walked around.
The only thing I didn't like, and it's nothing major, is the mock rock every where.

sea world
I all most didn't go to sea world due to the admission price, but I'm glad I did.
Ther are still a lot of rides and a real theme park feel to the place.
The exhibits are great. I stood and watched the polar bears for over an hour. I have seen polar bears at San Deigo, central park, San Francisco and the Bronx and I still rate sea worlds polar bear shores as my favourite exhibit.
It was my first time at sea world since they opened the big shark pools. The pool is divided into two with smaller sharks like white tipped reef sharks and leopard sharks in a reef pool with hundreds of tropical fish and large dusky whalers, bull and tiger sharks in a large pool with larger fish. Both pools had underwater window that were great. I really was impressed by these pools and I was glad I included a visit to sea world to my holiday just for this display alone.
Sea world is currently constructing a sting ray exhibit that, by the looks of what they have completed so far will be just as good as the shark pools.

I took a heap of photos, but for some reason I don't seem to be able to upload them to the gallery. I will keep trying

Nice reviews Boof, and it must have been bloody hot up there in Queensland while you were on holiday. How long of a drive was it to get there from NSW? Also, was there any significant construction around Australia Zoo? The African Savanna enclosures (rhinos, giraffes, etc) and Madagascar section of the zoo should be taking shape now. One other thing: approximately how long did you spend at each park? Cheers mate.

We flew up from NSW. My daughter is only 20 months old and the long drive would have been to much for her and probably to much for me and the missus as well.
It was very hot. Mid thirties each day.
We spent 2 hours at Currumbin and all day at the others.
A staff member from Australia Zoo said that within 18 months a new section will open with lions, cheetahs, rhinos and giraffes. didn't see any sign of the Madagascar section but there was a lot of construction going on near the elephant enclosure so it might be going down in that area with the African savannah.

Good to see they have Tasie Devils on display at Currumbin. I was disapointed that Dubbo had none on display even though they are breeding them. I am all for breeding facilities with no public viewing if it helps but you would think there may be some that could be avaliable for display.
