It was just announced that Tequila (an african elephant) died yesterday.I was shocked to hear this as Tequila was a very healthy animal.Ungulate, this must be so hard for you,im so sorry!Tequila contributed quite a bit with two living calfs and was actually the only elephant at Toronto Zoo to raise a calf to adulthood.I really am sorry to all the keepers at Toronto who loved her dearly as I know i love all the animals at Toronto Zoo.My condolences go out to all the keepers and the punblic like me who loved her so much.I always remember her as the one who got something she wanted always.Like one time,Toka was trying to play with a bucket but Tequila chased her away to get it.I think one of the most famous Tequila moments was when she caught her foot in a hanging tire and cou'd'nt get it out.Patsy led the rescue as some comforted her while others tried to pull the tire off until she was free.R.I.P Tequila :(

I'm sorry to hear this, and my condolences go out to everyone that loves the Toronto Zoo. I know what people that love the zoo must be going through, as I felt the same thing when Gita died in 06 here at the LA zoo. RIP Tequila:(

I am so sad to hear this, and so shocked :( I think I have a picture of her that I took just a few weeks ago, she looked so good.

I know just how hard it is to lose an animal suddenly; back in October, just as it looked like my dog, Hamish, was recovering from an illness, he passed away in his sleep. Everyone at the zoo, including the five ellie girls, have my most sincerest condolences.

:( I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the news this morning. I was just at the Zoo last week, and saw her. I even spent time talking with the Keeper about her. It's a great loss to the Zoo and to the rest of the elephants. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

I never new there was a thread for this I posted some of my thaughts in the Toronto Zoo History thread.

She was a very special animal and she will be deeply missed

Hi everyone,
It has been far too long since I've been on ZooBeat, and I'll try to catch up on some of the questions soon. Thanks to everyone for their condolences on the loss of Tequila. It was a complete and utter shock, and we are still waiting to find out what actually caused her death. In the meantime, we've been caught up trying to adjust our (and the elephant's) routine to compensate for her absence.

Tequila made a huge contribution to the zoo in her time here ... she was a very attractive elephant and very nice to work with. She is fortunately survived by two daughters: Thika (still at Toronto) and Tumpe (who is living at Disney's Animal Kingdom).

FYI, the foot-in-the-tire incident can be seen on youtube:
YouTube - elephant trouble

The narration doesn't REALLY describe what happens (especially at the end where Toka tries to pick a fight), but it is interesting none the less.

I remember seeing the tire incident on Wild Rescues.I think the first to elephants to come to her rescue were Toka and Iringa and the first one out the gate to the yard in the later seen I think was Patsy as she had a very wrinkled backside
