Raccoons invade Germany and ride the subway

The presence of raccoons in Germany is an invasive species story that I did not know. There may be almost a million of them running around and 68,000 were shot in the 2011 hunting season. A raccoon was found riding the subway in Berlin. Hide the strudel and schnitzel German Zoochat friends. The raccoons are coming for them.

Does every German zoo have a raccoon exhibit?

Unfortunately for Germany, it's 'a wonderland for raccoons' - latimes.com

This was classic:

"We're getting 50 calls a day…. I know of at least 500 raccoon families in the city," Ehlert said. "They are the most intelligent mammals in Europe. They're very quick."

I wasn't aware of this either. From around 12 pairs as founders, I wonder what the genetic diversity is like. And I wonder about the prevalence of rabies in the population.

The second article linked in Nanoboys post makes a reference to Stalin Crabs - I googled it and it is also an interesting story of an aggresively invasive species that is well worth a read. Declining in their native environment, exploding in their introduced range.
