After watching a dvd on British Newts that I had borrowed from a friend I was wondering what are the rarest animals in any UK collection as it stands my local zoo Dudley havequite a few of the now extremely rare Crested Newts and Red Squirrels hopefully both species will breed next year (2011)
I was wandering which other very rare species there are in our zoos the species do not have to be native, just wandering what we have in the UK

Barbary Lions
Sorocco Doves..
Smooth Coated Otters

Wait do you mean exotic wise or native species held on show as part of the collection?

Amur leopards are extreamly rare in the wild. A number of Uk collection keep them including Marwell, Edinburgh, Cotswold WP, Colchester, Tywcross and Thrigby Hall.

Durrell has lots of Critically Endangered species including Mountain Chicken frog's, Sumatran Orangutan's, Aloatran Gentle Lemur's and Black Lion Tamarin's.

As long as they are very rare and in the collection (on or off show) then it qualifies

I can name a few antelope species : Blue Duikers at Colchester Zoo, Red Forest Duikers at Chester, Whiet tailed Gnus at marwell and Newquay....

The Grey Bamboo Lemur (Hapalemur griseus griseus) at Port Lympne is the only one in Europe, though it is not that rare in the wild.

I had this pointed out the other day, but there is an individual Golden-bellied crowned monkey (Cercopithecus pogonias) (I think that's the right species), and it is the last specimen in captivity altogether. Twycross also have the UK's only Bonobos and Yellow-throated martens.

I saw the Francois langurs at Twycross, but they were in an awkward place so I didn't get a picture. I'm hoping to soon though :)

they're beautiful looking animals. I think I've got pictures from previous visits but not on Thursday's I don't think (not really had time to look through them and put them online yet)

Thursday is when I was there as well. They were up in one of the high windows. I've added some pics to my flickr, but I don't upload to the gallery on here because everytime I try it comes up with errors :(

@Bongorob. Belive me, Chester does have a female Red Forest duiker, maybe they still keep it behind the scenes. Otherwise, maybe it passed away....But they got one.
