Not sure if this has already been posted anywhere but Raymond Sawyer died aged 87 on the 21st February.

I never had the opportunity to visit his private collection but did meet him several times at the national exhibition of cage and aviary birds.

Maybe to my shame but I'd never even heard of Raymond Sawyer - but the loss of an animal person is always a shame - still he had a positive impact in his area and left a legacy - you can't ask for much more than that really!

A very sad loss,Raymond was a wonderfull person with a superb knowledge on many species and subjects.While many people will remember him for his work with birds,it must also be remembered that he is the only person to have bred Aldabran giant Tortoise in the UK,and also kept and bred many other species of Tortoise and Terrapins.I would like to hope that the collection could be kept in tact,but I doubt it will.

Very sad to learn of his death! I saw some video footage of his collection years ago. His aviaries were beautiful. Has anyone ever visited his collection? Did you take any pictures?

Colchester Zoo are receiving some of his Tortoises...two Aldabran have already arrived.

Raymond Sawyer was indeed a character with a studious and brilliant zoological mind many would have envied to achieve. I too hope his collection may remain intact (indeed he was the only breeder of Aldabrans in the UK and very much ahead of any zoos in breeding giant tortoises).

It would be great to get an album on here of his collection. if anyone had the honour of visiting it and took some pictures it would be great if they would upload some. I fear his collection will be disbanded. Fingers crossed Colchester can continue the breeding of the Aldabrans

I will have to dig out my pictures,from his place and get them scanned and post them on here.Just for the record he only managed to bred the Aldabrans the once,but then that is once more than anybody else in the UK.
