Reader's Digest has published an article titled The Best Zoo in Every State. I know nothing of the author (Amanda Tarlton) nor how she came up with her list. Some are spot on (San Diego Zoo, Bronx Zoo, Woodland Park Zoo). But some of the choices are so far out there they will have you pounding your computer (including her choice for "best" in my state of Arizona).

The fact the Minnesota zoo isn't listed as the best zoo in Minnesota really is astonishing.

The choices in Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio, Kentucky, Hawaii, Colorado, Arizona and Alabama range from debatable to just downright bizarre (San Antonio over Houston, Henry Vilas over Milwaukee County, and most of all Wildlife World zoo over the Phoenix). Certainly not the most sensible list if you ask me.

Something that always bothers me about lists like these is that they talk about why that one Zoo is the best, but rarely say what disqualified the others. Anyone can write 5 sentences about why one particular zoo is good, but in my opinion it would be much more interesting to see why the other zoos weren't chosen, instead of why these ones were.

The fact that Cincinnati is picked over Columbus is semi-approved by me, well, because I have bias...though, it would be an unfair choice that Cincinnati was chosen over Columbus.

How Metro Richmond was chosen over Virginia Zoo could be debatable, I feel that these zoos are equal in different aspects.

You know what, I have an idea. ZooChat should make our OWN Best Zoo List, you know, to show them who really knows their zoos...?

Best zoo lists will remain subjective and susceptible to personal opinion about what is important and how this is perceived. Some zoos are clearly better than others but from a certain level onwards comparisons get extremely tricky.
