Red River Hogs as mixed exhibits.

Red River Hog- to my mind an ideal 'zoo' species- colourful, comical-looking and interesting to watch. Does anyone know of places that keep them in mixed exhibits with other species? If so, where and which?

Duisburg - mixed with watussi cattle
Emmen - the hogs live in the large savannah exhibit together with rhinos, giraffes, waterbuck, wildebeest, zebras, impalas ect.

I've read that Jersey are considering a new 'Bai' type exhibit for their Gorillas, possibly with RR Hogs as a mix-in species. I wonder how much they would damage the enclosure vegetation though?

Then there is one of the best zoo exhibits on the planet: Congo Gorilla Forest at the Bronx Zoo contains a splendid habitat with red river hogs, mandrills, Wolf's guenons and DeBrazza monkeys.

Sounds excellent.

1. What is the flooring comprised of?

2. How many of these five species are actually living together?

3. Any specific compatability problems noted between any species.?

The exhibit is soil with lots of trees.
All species may be present together, but not always.
On occasion the mandrills - well the big male - and the RRH don't get along

@Pertinax: fellow ZooBeat member Zooplantman beat me to the response! The exhibit is absolutely brilliant, and if you go to the Bronx Zoo's photo pages in the gallery there are a few shots on the 10th and 11th page of that zoo's gallery. It was difficult to obtain more photos due to tons of zoo visitors as well as glare from the glass, but also around those pages are loads of shots of the okapi and 20+ gorillas that are within nearby habitats. The Congo Gorilla Forest section of the zoo is regarded as one of the very best zoo exhibits anywhere in North America, and most likely the entire world.

I have just checked those photos out, and well WOW.

The whole area seems amazing, what the breeding record of those species in the mixed RR hogs enclosure?

At Valencia bioparc (Spain) the RR hogs are in a mixed enclosure with dwarf forest buffalos and in a near enclosure are sitatungas, talapoins, Nile goose's, pygmy hippos, drills & de brazza monkeys.

Jersey may have some difficulty importing RRHs. One reason that few hoofstock have been at the zoo is due to strict quarantine laws to protect the main gene bank of Jersey cows. If memory serves me correct they have only ever had peccaries, babirusas, tapirs and Przewalski horses.

So why would they have problems with RR hogs? With them having peraries, babirusas & tapirs.

They have had those hoofed stock species at some stage during the life of the zoo but they have none of them now. It would presumably depend on whatever is the current policy on Jersey/CI's about such imports. Jersey are very proud of their zoo so maybe would 'pull strings' for them...

Also, if they were to obtain them from an urban zoo e.g. ZSL it might further affect the decision too.

It does look pretty amazing, rather like a 'Diorama' in a museum but with live animals! It also looks very spacious, at least from the photos showing the RR hogs.

I suppose only a 'great zoo' such as New York's could raise enough money to create such an amazing exhibit.

Jersey wanted pygmy hogs in the 1970's but they had to be quarantined first in another European country. They did not have much success and they were left with an all male group and the import never went ahead. I think the quarantine was carried out by Zurich.
