Hello.

I am trying to get a baseline view of what information about giraffe biology and conservation is being conveyed to zoo visitors through the giraffe exhibits in zoos around the world.

As we have folks here from literally every corner of the world I'm hoping that some of you can help me gather this information.

If you could take a picture of the giraffe exhibit signs and interpretive graphics at your local zoo or zoos that you visit and either post them to this thread and/or send them to me directly I would be very grateful.

The goal of this project is to understand what giraffe conservation message is going out through the world's giraffe exhibits. Much of what is assumed about giraffe conservation is rapidly changing. There are likely more than one species and several of them (Rothschild, reticulated, West African giraffe [G.c. peralta], possibly Masai) are in real trouble in the wild.

if you have any questions about this please let me know, and thanks in advance for any help you can lend with this.

Thank you.

David

I will try and help you out, but give me a few days. One of my main jobs at my zoo has become giraffe interpreter at our giraffe feeding station. Being well versed in giraffe info and conservation, I can say that the main message is one of "don't touch the giraffe's eyes, they don't like that."

This may be of interest - my favourite piece of giraffe interpretation:

http://www.zoochat.com/37/giraffe-interpretation-cologne-07-09-10-a-198357/

This is one of a series of interactive displays at Cologne. There's huge plunger to allow you to try to push 'blood' up a tube to giraffe head height - an excellent demonstration of the work a giraffe's circulatory system has to do!

@jbnbsn99: Thanks for your help and for keeping the public out of the giraffes' eyes.

Any thoughts or advice about how we can get the giraffe conservation message out through the giraffe feeding decks around the world would be appreciated.

Ditto anyone else who works in zoo giraffe (or any species) interpretation

@Maguari: Thank you for the link. This is very cool. I have not seen an interactive display like this before re: giraffe hearts.

I asked our education director today what, if anything the zoo was doing about giraffe conservation, and he had a blank stare on his face. I am wondering if I put something together in more or less a formal format, if we couldn't get something put in place the help promote giraffe conservation?
