Two female white rhinos are being sent from perth zoo Orana. Katala and Tamu are the two. Tamu is the first rhino to be born at the zoo, Katala is one of the two adult females that were sent from SA.
Question, Katala has never bred and they are sending her to Orana in the hope that she will. This is a similar idea to Hamilton obtaing a ne male. Are the zoos hoping that a new male will stimulate the females that haven't yet bred?

Sorry I'll change that a bit.
Ithink Katala is the mother of Tamu, avvording to the news article, Sabie the other adult female at Perth is the mother of the second calf, Bakari. But I thought that the one female was the mother of both calves. I'm confused now.

Perth's rhinos

Jay,

Sabie is the mother of both calves. Tamu is a sister to the new calf born in 2005. Katala to my knowledge has never bred. Probably the reason why she is now being moved out to breed at Orana Park. Fingers crossed she and Tamu will make a good breeding group with the lone Orana males!

thanks jelle, I knew that one of the females was the mother of both calves.

Hamilton/Auckland

and Hamilton and Auckland zoos swapped each others male rhinos , for eventual breeding purposes .

Katala and Tamu have been transfered to Orana as part of the CMP for Rhino in the region. Orana has two males and two females and breed a male in 2000 who was moved to Monarto in 2004.

Welcome Falco to this great board and lets hope that Orana will soon have lots of little rhino feet.
I just have a couple of questions that you might be able to fill in for me. Can you give me the details (names, ages where they came from etc) of the two females that you already had at Orana. and secondly can you confirm for me that one of your males was born at Dubbo?
Thank you
Jai

Thanks Jay

Our two female came from San Diego Wild Animal Park
Untani 8 July 1984
Mapenzi 29 June 1984

And yes Stumpy did come from Dubbo, he was the first Rhino at Orana in 1988

Falco,

What is happening with breeding the new rhino females? How is the dominant male (Stumpy/Nyasa or Cyrano)? Do you have any news regarding any of them?

On ISIS Orana lists only 2.2 (before 2.4). Have both San Diego born females been sent elsewhere (to stimulate their breeding)?

Jelle
