River Wonders River Wonders news 2024

Does anyone remember the huge softshell turtle (Pelochelys cantorii) that resided within the Ganges River exhibit, alongside the gharials & Geoclemys ?

It was a really cool addition to the park, and it disappeared abruptly some time in 2017. It would be rather unfortunate if it's already deceased, considering how critically endangered the species is.

I did get to see Zoo Negara's large specimen a few months ago, and that is supposedly in its 50s.

This one, right?
I saw it during my visit there back in 2014. The signage said "Indian Flapshell Turtle" AFAIK.

There are no Nilssonia in Mandai's collection, unless they are not logged in ZIMS.
I distinctly remember (the team) being called to remove "the Nilssonia from Treetops Trail" during my time there, I think there was only 2 or 3, all were moved to their informal "Turtle Care Centre" and were never placed on display again. Massive animals they were.

When I came back to visit sometime in 2021 and checked out the "centre," they passed already.

And if you are curious, the "centre" is simply one of Mandai's very old, but huge butterfly aviaries that were retrofitted to house several stock tubs and aquariums to house and breed many chelonian species not on display, only accessible to staff.

im aware that one of the Giant Otters was named Chico. is he still in the collection or did they rename him to Fino, like how they renamed Growie the giraffe to Marco?

Just to add, the Giant River Otters that we have (at least according to this video) are Carla and Fino, I don't think we have any more currently aside from those two?
