Royal Zoological Society of Scotland Journal?

Hi folks,

this is a long-shot, but you never know! I have recently started reading Henry Tegner’s 1954 book “The White Foxes of Gorfenletch” and in the front is a publisher’s note saying:

“In the 1949 edition of the Journal of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, there is an account of the occurrence of a number of white foxes in the countryside which lies below the Cheviot Hills.”

All my searches for this reference (Web of Science, ZSL library catalogue and good old Google) have drawn a blank. I can’t find any records of there even being a “Journal of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland”. Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there a journal for the RZSS?

This may be a coincidence, or it might be the answer you are looking for. I have in my library four editions of "Scottish Zoo and Wildlife - The Magazine of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland":

Volume 1: issue IV (1949)
Volume 2: issues II (1949), III (1949) and IV (1950).

The content is very similar to the old Zoo and Animal Magazine published by the ZSL (between 1936 and 1941) with a mix of features and stories about wildlife and zoos (including "news from the zoos"). The journal is not glossy but does include some photographs and runs to about 40 pages each edition. It is edited by T.H.Gillespie (who else?...) and the various editions contain some really great material.

I have no idea how many editions were published as I've never seen (or heard) of any other than those that belong to me.

The article you refer to about the albino foxes is in Vol II, issue III.

Mystery solved.

If you enjoyed The White Foxes you should read Rhymeside.It is another fictionalised account of a sportsman's life of fun and diversion set in the same area.Henry Tegner wrote a lot of charming books on sport and natural history.
