San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2019

It came up in the ZooChat Cup competition, so I thought I'd post it here as an interesting note. General admission tickets at San Diego Zoo are now $58 USD, compared to $50 when I visited 5 years ago. That means prices have risen 16% - roughly twice the rate of inflation over that time period.

That's a relatively recent boost. Granted I can think of many institutions whose cost has been raised in the last year, as well as those planning to do so in the near future...

That's an extraordinary amount of money, even for what I consider to be America's best zoo. By contrast, I would personally rank Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium in the #2 slot and the winter admission price for an adult is a measly $15.95 and only $21.95 in the summer. Not only that, but since Omaha is such a large zoo it's possible to purchase a ticket for a second day at 1/2 price. Then of course there is Saint Louis Zoo, a strong contender for being America's 3rd 'best' zoo...and it's free! San Diego Zoo's price is a bit eye-watering in comparison to Omaha and Saint Louis...:p

Zoo (and theme park) prices have been increasing well above inflation levels on this side of the pond as well. This has to do with these attractions having to keep renewing and construction costs are up as well...

I'm fairly certain you're right, and it would be interesting to see the comparisons on price increases for many zoos. However, I brought it up for San Diego specifically because of what @snowleopard posted: San Diego's prices were *already* far higher than zoos of a similar caliber (ex. 2.5 times that of Omaha), and so I think the increase for them is particularly noteworthy (and IMO, troubling).

There is an additional factor in San Diego's case I suspect; California's minimum wage has been going up. I know many California attractions have been seeing or considering admission hikes since it then costs them more to keep people paid.

Based on a episode of The Zoo: San Diego (all episodes along with “The Zoo” in New York are available to watch now on Animal Planet).

The Reason why the Safari Park has a breeding herd of Grevy’s Zebras while the San Diego Zoo has a bachelor herd.

The Bachelor herd serves a place for stallions who are retired from breeding and for young stallions to grow up to be chosen as a breeding male when moved to the Safari Park and other zoos.

Tembo that African elephant has died :(

Security Check

What a shame. The vet team had used various treatments for her arthritis, including acupuncture. Follow-up tests right afterwards seemed to show considerable improvement. I had real hopes for this as a treatment for all our arthritic elephants. Like me, with an early-onset accelerated arthritis, no treatment works for more than a short while except joint replacement (3) and spinal ablations (8) which are way too complicated in elephants. Nevertheless we are facing the largest age group in the population facing arthritis as a predictable cause of their deaths.

To put it seriously, Tembo was the highlight of going to the San Diego Zoo for me, a legitimate landmark and one of the zoo's most charismatic animals. Shame she fell to such a crippling ailment, and the zoo legitimately made strides in the treatment of arthritis. So now, it's Mary, Devi, and Shaba? (And potentially more geriatic females? Bamboo and Chai would have loved it here from Woodland Park)

To put it colloquially, F in the chat, boys.
