Sandy Updates?

Your right, it takes me wonder too. Pictures on TV and internet from the City of New York are really scary.

I am sure Im not the only person on here wondering how zoos in Sandys path are coping? Does anyone have any news?

Practically all major zoos and aquaria in New England (with the exception of New England Aquarium) are closed today. Most zoos/aquaria's animals are fine and they are just assessing any damage.

From the Maryland Zoo's Facebook page (17 hours ago):hanks to all our hard-working staff and keepers who have worked both in and out of exhibits to help prepare for the storm. We'll keep you updated as we have more information to share and as the storm progresses. Please stay safe everyone!

From the National Zoo's page: "Good morning! All the animals and staff at the National Zoo are safe after the effects of Hurricane Sandy! We did have some trees come down, so today we're working on cleaning up the outdoor habitats and public spaces. We hope to see our visitors again, soon! Keep an eye here and on the homepage for when we will reopen."

Fron the Staten Island Zoo, 12 hours ago: "Dear Zoo Friends, rest assured that all of our animals are safely protected from Hurricane Sandy. Our dedicated staff has brought many of our outdoor animals inside in anticipation. We have a team of employees spending the evening to watch over our facility that has withstood many other hurricanes over the last 75 years. We all wish you safety and comfort through this storm."

No Facebook up-dates from Turtleback Zoo, Beardsley Zoo, Franklin Park Zoo

This from the Maritime Aquarium: "CLOSED today. Volunteer Training Class tonight CANCELLED. We will post later today regarding Wednesday. Doing damage assessment."
" We expect everything will be fine, some cleanup involved. We have backup generators (2) to keep the animals' life support systems going. Our Animal Husbandry and Maintenance folks spent the night at the Aquarium to keep all the animals safe and sound. Thank you for your concern."

And Philadelphia Zoo: "STORM Update: The Philadelphia Zoo was fortunate to experience no serious impact from the storm. Extensive staff preparation in terms of animal relocation, leaf removal, deployment of sandbags and hay bales, equipment inspection, and storage of an array of loose items helped minimize our risks. Many staff critical to animal care and facilities volunteered to stay overnight, and were prepared to respond if any serious issues arose.

We thank all our wonderful staff for keeping the animals safe throughout this storm!"

From Mystic Aquarium:
We are thankful to report that all of our animals and our overnight animal care team are safe and sound. Thank you for your overwhelming wishes of safety and support. We are closed today and will let you know when we plan to reopen.
From Roger Williams Park Zoo:
Good news, friends of the Zoo: we had no significant damage during the storm! We'll be closed today, as planned, for clean up, and then back open tomorrow in time for Halloween. That includes the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular!
From New England Aquarium:
The Aquarium is open today! Hope you all survived the storm and are recovering quickly from Sandy. Come on by if you need refuge from the storm's aftermath.

ZooAmerica said that they're fine and they are closed to keep an eye on things down there.

They had the Bobcats out during the storm for some reason according to their Facebook page!

Nothing worth mentioning in Boston, due to Sandy. Some smaller trees were came down, twigs and leaves. That's about it. I had prepared just in case of loss of power for my ectotherms with a generator, but never had to use it. The power never went off and the lights were off for normal night time schedule and all ectotherms are fine. Happy it dodged us, but feel for others that were affected greatly by it. The Aquarium was open today, and it was rather nice not being crowded, as usual. It was nice to get the kids there for a few hours, after being cooped up in the house yesterday.

This coming from Cape May County zoo in southern tip of Jersey.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during the storm. We are happy to report that we weathered the storm and are busy cleaning up today. Hopefully we can get this mess under control and re-open later this week

Hows Good Zoo doing

This has nothing to do with how the zoos are doing but on Facebook there's a picture of a shark swimming in the flood waters next to a persons home!! Very strange I'd think all the marine life would have swam further into sea to avoid the storm.

I've seen lots posted here and there that is either screenshots from movies or Photoshopped. Don't believe everything you see.

Good life lesson. I just saw the photo for a second so the fact that it's probably fake never crossed my mind. If you think about it, that was kind of shallow water for a medium sized shark and mabye too good of a picture and for someone to have their camera right at that moment would be a very opturtunistic moment.
