Hi Everyone,

My name is Mark and I grew up in the 1960s visiting Taronga Park Zoo. I can remember seeing American squirrels living in the trees and being told they escaped from one of the American WWII warships that visited Sydney Harbour. I still have so many vivid memories of this amazing place and remember I had a fascination with the elephants and the elephant house. Of course I did occasionally ride on the elephants and the small train in that part of the zoo.
I have tried to find a definitive history of the zoo and wonder if anyone has ever been into the archives and produced something. I would dearly love to view any photos from the 60s.My family did have many photos but were destroyed in a bushfire.
Hope to hear from you soon.
PS recently took my family to the zoo and really loved looking inside the elephant house.

welcome mwoolveridge I hope you enjoy your visits, I visited Taronga in the December of 2001 But from what I have seen in the gallery sections here and the TV show on Sky It has changed rather a lot in the intervening years.
I did have an old book on the history of Taronga zoo I can't recall the title I sold it on ebay a few years ago when money was short. I would try ebay and see if any one is listing a copy.

Welcome to ZooChat Mark!

There are quite a large number of photos of Taronga Zoo in the Gallery, including series from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, but maybe none from the 1960s. I'm not sure if there is a history of Taronga book, although old guide books, probably including from the 1960s, are fairly easy to find online. There is a 1979 book about the first 100 years of the Royal Zoological Society of NSW, but this has few photos of the zoo, and provides only a fairly basic history of the zoo.
