servals bred in Idaho....

I wonder if the female Serval coming to LA will be on breeding loan or just to keep company to the zoo's male serval. I would think it's for breeding, as the zoo is renovating the current serval exhibit and adding a second exhibit for the servals.

By "nation" do they mean USA or just Idaho?

They mean USA

Los Angeles is one of the few serval holding facilities that has received a breeding reccommendation from the PMP.

So does this imply that there are domestic cat genes in the rest of the serval population?

The article does seem to imply this, Ituri. However out of the 100+ servals in North America only 9 of these cats have 100% known parentage. In essence the total captive breeding population is 9, now 12 individuals.

That is why this litter is such a big deal, because several serval were imported from Africa a few years back. Since then only one other litter has been born from this new founder stock.

So it's not a case of known gene contamination, it's just a case of unknown origins.
