Weihai Shendiaoshan Wildlife Park Shendiaoshan Wildlife Park in China

I visited last February and have finally uploaded my photos:

Weihai Shendiaoshan Wildlife Park - ZooChat

A few thoughts:

It is a ridiculous place.

There is such a variety, indeed a cacophony, of enclosures that it is inevitable that some of them have ended up being okay. However, much of this zoo is simply appalling. There is a fundamental disregard for animal welfare, whether it be having a dolphin pool in the same space at the chlorination tanks, keeping a chimp alone, reptile exhibits with glass tops that visitors walk over, terrapins for sale in little plastic bottles, or chickens being live-fed to wolves.

In the midst of winter there were almost no other guests, some of the more egregious practices that @Deer Forest documented weren't to be seen, but I wouldn't be confident they have stopped.

One of the key species that I hoped to see there, Laotian Langurs, was miss-signed as Francois's and in my 'keen to get out of there' state I didn't investigate. It still hurts.

The pinniped sea pens are actually quite interesting and, assuming the local water temperature is suitable would be impressive. That is of course, if it weren't for the fact that the water appears to be very polluted.

Despite all of this, I somehow think people should visit, if they are within striking distance of it (Qingdao is the nearest 'major' city). It is a zoo like no other in the world, and you will have a mind-boggling day.

Thanks for the mini-review, I’ve spent quite a bit of time looking through all your photos of the place. The exhibits look mostly abysmal although some of the outdoor pinniped enclosures look pretty decent.

Shen Diaoshan Wildlife Park announced that an African elephant was born in the park on July 6th, marking the first time an elephant has been bred there.
This also makes it another zoo in China that has successfully bred African elephants, following Beijing Zoo (3 in total, with one having died in Harbin) Chimelong Safari Park (10), Shanghai Wild animal Park (3), Beijing Wildlife Park (2-3), Wuhan Zoo (1 has died), and Shijiazhuang Zoo (1).

Elephant husbandry at least must be reasonable then
