Short Beaked Echidna

Hi, I am currently studying my Cert 3 in Captive Animals. I would love to hear any facts or observations anyone has on the short beaked echidna. I have been unable to find information on how to detect age. please share you experiences and knowledge.

I observe that many zoos that keep them tend to use reverse lighting, even though they're diurnal. The ones I see kept outdoors tend to be very active. Seeing as you're in Australia, have you seen them in the wild much?

All the echidna I've ever seen have been kept in indoors with reverse lighting. I think echidna are more active when it's cooler, right? I believe they aren't very heat tolerant.

I've seen echidna in both normal and reverse lighting at Brookfield Zoo, they are currently in the reverse lighting section

Zoos do not routinely keep echidnas in nocturnal exhibits in Australia. I think I’ve seen it... *maybe* once.

Earlier this year Paignton moved Bruce, their elderly echidna, from an outdoor enclosure to an indoor exhibit with reversed lighting. There are a lot of photos of Bruce in our Paignton Gallery (including far too many from me) and plenty of comments about him in the Paignton Forum.

I believe that short beaked echidnas do better in dark lighting. In the zoos I have been to I have seen bright lighted exhibit and nocturnal themed exhibits. Based on my viewing of zoos I have seen short beaked echidnas much more active in a darker light setting.
