A week and a half ago, I happened to see the PBS show Nature which was an episode on captive breeding to save very rare species. It was fantastic!
Even showed the pairing of two large turtles in China I had never heard of - the last two of their species. Female from one zoo was sent to join male at another zoo (with a much better exhibit). Also featured iberian lynx, black-footed ferret, and a Qatari bird and rare animal breeding center. Very worthwhile viewing; here's a link: The Loneliest Animals - Video: Full Episode - Endangered Species - Captive Breeding | Nature
