The only real island in the landlocked country, located in the extreme south in the Lake of Prespa (Prespansko ezero, Преспанско езеро), is officially called Golem grad (остров Голем град) and it is also known as the snake island, due to very dense population of snakes that inhabit the island, from three species, including the most venomous snake of Europe (Vipera ammodytes), and also Natrix natrix and Natrix tesselata. It is also inhabited by the Herman tortoise (with a greater bias toward males in the population) and several other reptile species and a lot of water birds. This is a subtropical island in a lake. People say, when you step on the island, you see snakes on very often occasion. I have never been here.

The island is not inhabited by humans, and it is part of the strictly protected area within Galicica national park - sparking interlake mountain of Galicica and part of the two lakes (Ohrid and Prespa) in southwestern R. Macedonia. The island can be reached only on small boats and special approval is needed from the city council. The island is known among European herpetologist (@Batto have you ever heard of this island? :) ) with recent research of the reptile population on the island. Male Herman tortoises were showing a lot of aggression in the mating season because of the bias toward male in the population and fewer females.

Here is an article about this island in English: The Snake Island

Here is a very interesting video in French:
